The film deals with bollywood and those who censor Indian films and their views. As it known that rules relating to censorship are very strict and which scenes should be cut from a film also depends on the whims and fancies of the censor board members who are the voices of moral guardians of the society. The film begins with a scene in parliament where politicians say that they should decide what the people would see. Another politician opposes this view. This film is about the problems a director Vikramjit (Dev Anand) faces when his film goes to the censor board to get certified. This is the story of a film within a film. Prior to the screening of the film by the censor board, vikramjit organises a screening for the public where they are asked to act as the censor and give their views. Among the audience is a leading member of the academy awards committee Margaret Freedom (Archana Puran Singh) Awards. In the meantime Aane Wala Kal is viewed by the screening committee of the censor board consisting of Rekha, Jackie Shroff, Mamta Kulkarni, Amrish Puri, Smita Jaykar and Nikhil Kapoor and some of the members display double standards as they do not practice what they preach. The film is passed with 13 cuts and an A certificate. However Vikramjit insists on a U certificate for which he approaches the I & B minister who adds five more cuts to the existing 13 cuts of the film. Vikramjit then approaches the High Court for justice. Meanwhile a print of the film is smuggled abroad by Vikramjit and the film walks away with two Oscars for best foreign language film and for best director. When the news reaches the censor board in India, they file a case against Vikramjit. Vkramjit appears before the judge (Shammi Kapoor) to defend himself and comes out victorious. The judge passe s a judgement that the country needs to review its censor policy.
