With the rise of Parallel Cinema’s in 70’s, We witnessed some fine actors like Naseerudin Shah, Om Puri, Smita Patil, Shabhana Azmi, Farooq Sheikh, Amol Palekar, Deepti Naval and many more. These Actors excelled the actor’s caliber to another level and became an institution in themselves. Slowly they started moving towards commercial cinema and that’s where most of them started failing. The past work of these actors was highly creditable, thus they managed to keep their shop running. Thanks to the recent times and change of cinematic levels, they managed to do what they were best known for. The list grew bigger with more actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Kay Kay Menon, Irfan Khan, Rahul Bose, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vinay Pathak and many more. So in today’s times even if a small film has some of these actors, the film lovers are sure that they might get worth of their money. This week’s notable release “Chaalis Chauraasi” boosts of great actors like Naseerudin Shan, Kay Kay Menon and Atul Kulkarni. All of them are choosy and great actors, so let’s find out whether the film has something different to offer or might be just another commercial run of the mill types films trying to encash the actor’s status.

“Chaalis Chauraasi” is story of four small time criminals Pankaj Suri{Naseerudin Shah}, Bobby {Atul Kulkarni}, Albert Pinto {Kay Kay Menon} and Shakti {Ravi Kishen}. Pankaj Suri alias Sir comes to know about a hideout where they makes counterfeit notes. Together they hatch a plan to get hold of all the currency. What happens next is what the entire film about.

Story on one line basis is good. But on overall basis it has nothing new to offer except for the police background in the story. We have seen ample of such types of films where some small timers decide to con a big fish and lots of kiosk happens. Screenplay is fine in the start of the film, but almost disappears pre interval. Due to lack for script the movie relies only on few incidents post interval. Still the whole Naseer – Ravi chat in police van followed by Atul and Kay Kay interpretation about Sukhdev Baba, Atul in corporate office and the whole Raid in the hotel manages to entertain you. Wished the movie had more of such humorous moments. On the flip side the screenplay drags a lot at many points followed by a weak Climax which could have been the best moment of the film. Camera work is fine.

Music by Lalit Pandit is enjoyable. Officially “Hawa Hawa” makes its mark in the Hindi film after two decades. It still has the same magic. “Badmast” is good song, but looked forced in the screenplay, never the less enjoy it for Naseerudin Shah’s dance. “Setting Zala” is another entertaining song but total misfit.

Director Hriday Shetty always starts with a good concept, but fails while executing. Even out here he could have made a better film with all those great actors, but sadly ends up with a typical average product. Also at many places the film looked bit dated. We have seen so many films on such genre {99, Ek chaalis Ki Local, Sankat City, etc}, thus one should try to excel in it, rather than trying to match with them.

Naseerudin Shah does his part well but if compared with his past glory, this film might not be in his top list. Atul Kulkarni does a decent job and entertains with his character. Kay Kay Menon and Ravi Kishen are plain average. Zakir Hussain, Rajesh, Manoj Pawa and the item girls are below average.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai Dum ?
Dum hai in some scenes and overall plot, but with lack of tight script and weak screenplay the film ends up as a average product. A good opportunity was lost as with such talented actors the writers should have focused over the script. It should have been Forty times better than what it is now and then only they would had done justice to such talented actors.
