Chala Mussaddi - Office Office rating: 3 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 05 Aug 2011)

Last year we witnessed a small T.V Serial “KHICHDI” made in a full length movie. This trend is quite regular and popular in Hollywood, but sadly out here it took so many years to achieve it. Brilliant opportunities were lost in form of Nukkad, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Fauji, Karamchand, Hum Log, etc. Though were some minor attempts done in films like ‘Jaan Ki Baazi’ where the whole team of ‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’ appeared as the serial characters in the movie not to forget the feature adaptation of popular radio show – Inspector Eagle by Sanjeev Kumar. So to carry forward the trend Eagle films {Makers of so many hit movies and popular T.V Shows} brings us one of the best written and I guess highest award winning serial “Office Office” on silver screen. So let’s find out if this movie has the same charm as it had on the telly tube.

“Chala Mussaddi - Office Office” is story of Mussadi Lal {Pankaj Kapur} a retired school teacher whose wife {Farida Jalal} dies due to hospital staffs negligence. Mussadi decides to go for a ‘Chaar Dhaam’ trip with his son Bunty {Gaurav Kapoor}. Till the time he comes back, the pension office staff declares him dead and stops his pension. Mussadi tries to convince them, but everything goes in vain, thus starts the journey of Mussadi to prove his existence.

Story is different but already used in Nakul Vaids ‘Mohanlal’ and that too in bold and serious manner. Sadly out here the makers try to say in the ‘Munna Bhai’ style and thus fail miserably as it’s neither funny nor hard hitting. There are some good and funny moments {matching with the serial form} when Mussadi is travelling in train; Pension Office meeting, Pandit Ceremony and few more. But that’s not enough to re live the black humor presented in the T.V Series. Many more such events were required in this film and that too with good punch lines and funny moments. But thanks to the slow narration, unnecessary serious topics and some illogical dramatic scenes the movie fails to even impress the biggest fan of this serial. Camera work is average.

Music by Sajid Wajid is good but with Gulzar as lyrics writer one does expect more and memorable. The title track keeps repeating in the film with Makrand Deshpande singing it in various forms at various locations.

Director Rajiv Mehra who gave us hits like ‘Ek Jaan Hai Hum’, ‘Pyar Ke Do Pal’ & ‘Chamatkar’, not to forget the T.V Serials like ‘Zabaan Sambhal Ke’ & ‘Office Office’ tries to make his small screen wonder come alive on the larger sceen. But thanks to bad writing by Ashwani Dhir and lack of good humor and original content, the film fails down and one hardly finds the directors touch in it.

Pankaj Kapur is an ace actor and when he did this serial he took black comedy to another level. Out here too he does his part with total conviction. But the half baked role does not support him. Gaurav Kapoor is fine, Farida Jalal is wasted. Manoj Pawa, Hemant Pandey, Sanjay Mishra, Deven Bhojani & Asawari Joshi have done wonderful work in the T.V Serial and out here tries their best to be in their characters. They adapt themselves in all the various locations like Hospital, Train, Pandits, Pension Office and Collectors Office. But when you have a weak writing even the stalwarts fails.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, but sirf kutch kutch scenes mein hai. The whole concept gets wasted due to lack of some good screen writing followed by interesting moments. If only the makers and writers would had tried showing three to four best episodes of the T.V Serial out here, still the film would had worked. But iss Office mein kutch bhi nahi hai, except for some old dusty empty files with name of top T.V Serial ‘Office Office’.
