Chalo Dilli rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 29 Apr 2011)

In Hollywood there have been so many films where two different people from different culture or personalities meet each other accidently and later have to travel together. Most of times such movies are pure Rom-Com or then there are some comedies like ‘Due Date’ and others. Out here we too have witnessed such movies in name of ‘Bombay to Goa’, ‘Dil Hai Ki Manata Hi Nahin’, ‘Humraahi’ and many more. But almost all of such movies in our Hindi films are Romantic films, keeping aside some films like ‘Hum Dono’, Etc. Lara Dutta teams up with team of Dasvidaniya {Shashant Shah & Vinay Pathak} for their next film ‘Chalo Dilli’ based on a travel relationship between two different people from different background. So how much similar will this film be with those we have watched in Hollywood and out here too, or this might be out of the box type film? Let’s find out.

“Chalo Dilli” is story of high society corporate person Mihika {Lara Dutta} who is traveling from Mumbai to Delhi, to meet her husband out there. Her flight gets delayed and she meets up a down to earth person from Delhi Manu Gupta {Vinay Pathak}. Mihika is irritated with Manu’s mannerism and decided to stay away from him in the flight. Unfortunately the flight lands at Jaipur due to some problem and Mihika has to hire a Cab to Delhi. On the way Mihika indulge in a tiff with the cab driver and before she could land in trouble, Manu comes to her rescues and decides to travel with them. Thus starts the roller coaster ride of these two different people from different culture and background to the capital city Delhi.

Story has shades from few Hollywood films and also our desi Randhir Kapoor starrer Humrahi. But overall it’s still different, thanks to being it a non romantic film. The film starts off well with some good and hilarious moments like Vinay’s entry, Vinay – Lara at book shop, The whole Car Driver scene, Vinay-Lara at the Dhabba, The Train journey scene and few more. But then movies are not made on incidents or scenes, it needs a concrete script which joins everything. Sadly out here the script which bounds these scenes was missing at times. Thus making the scenes forced or unwanted. In the second half the movie struggles to find the script which too has lost its way just like our lead travelers. The climax looked quite simple and again thanks to lack of script – unwanted. But the finale part was nice and did remind us that yes this film is directed by Shashant Shah. Editing needed to be tighter in the pre climax scenes. Few more scenes like the whole Curfew track and Lara-Vinay landing in company of goons should have been handled with more sensibility. Also at many points the logic goes for toss. Dialogs and one liner are the main highlight of the film. The whole character of Vinay Pathak rest on the smart and witty dialogs and one liner. His way of telling ‘Konsi Badi Baat Hai’ is simple amazing. Camera work is good and manages to get the earthen flavor in the film.

Music in such films is not bad. Tracks like Matargashtiya and chalo dilli are good and keeps well with the mood of the film. Laila O Laila remix is bad and unwanted. Background music is good.

Shashant Shah made his impressive mark with Dasvidaniya, and out here he tries to attempt a fun filled film. He succeeds, but only in parts. The movie is not boring, it does keep you interested in it, but the fun element or the entertainment element keeps coming and going in between. We accepted the moments in the first half, but then as the movie leads to its second half the story should have taken the center stage. Sadly it dint and the moments kept continuing, thus making it unwanted and forced. The climax too with entry of Super star was not required. The makers should have kept the film simple and sweet. Though in the last scene he does manage to get that right, but I guess he had missed the bus. Still we give him good marks for keeping the film a non romantic film and more important a human level film.

Vinay Pathak does what he best in – Make us laugh with his silliness and kind hearted act. The first half has some good enjoyable moments thanks to him, but later at many times started being repetitive and stale. Lara Dutta’s whole character establishment was superb. She suited her character so well and her dressing {hardly one or two dress}, style, attitude, etc was of total high class. Rahul Singh, Brijendra Kale and others in small role were fine. The super star actor in the climax looked great, but was not required at all in the film

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai, kai scenes mein dum hai, thanks to the lead pair some scenes are total hilarious. But lack of story and dragging second half the film falls short to its expectations or the level it should had been. Still not a bad watch, as this journey has its different moments and halts, leading to safe and one time watch destination.
