Chalo Ishq Ladaaye operates in a make-belief world and has one objective- to raise one's spirits. Sapna (Rani Mukherji) is a successful film star and Pappu (Govinda) is a singer in an orchestra group. Pappu is an ardent fan of Sapna's and calls himself Fan Number 1. Like all other fans Pappu keeps himself informed about everything that Sapna does and yearns to meet her some day. Sapna is in love with Rahul (Sanjay Suri) whom she also desires to marry till she suddenly stumbles upon Rahul's frivolity. She sees Rahul in the swimming pool frolicking with another girl and telling her that his decision to marry Sapna is for convenience, not love. Sapna immediately calls off the marriage. Pappu lives with his Dadi (Zohra Sehgal) since his parents' died. Dadi is a strict guardian to him and controls all his activities. Pappu is disturbed by Dadi’s control over him and want to get rid of her. Pappu and Sapna meet by chance the same day that Sapna and Rahul break up. Pappu as expected is too stupefied to react but soon gathers his wits. When he learns of Rahul's treachery, he vows to kill Rahul and in return requests Sapna to kill his Dadi. Pappu does not realise that Sapna was drunk at the time of this incident. He calls this deal of the murders "adla-badla". Pappu chalks out a plan to kill Rahul (though at the end of the film we realise that Rahul has drowned in a drunken state, not killed as Pappu claims). He then appears before Sapna and demands his share -Dadi's elimination from life. Sapna is shocked to hear of Rahul's death. But with her faithful secretary, Kakkoji (Kader Khan) she does convince Pappu of silencing Dadi. Sapna and secretary Kakkoji go to Ranikhet on a shooting assignment. Pappu gets wind of this and follows them there with his Dadi. Incidentally Ranikhet was Pappu's ancestral home. In Ranikhet through several attempts Sapna and Kakkoji try to kill Dadi, but Dadi is too smart for them. On the other side, the police are trying to unravel the mystery of Rahul's death. The corrupt Kamat (Gulshan Grover) decides to make a scapegoat of Pappu and in this manner extract a large ransom from Sapna. He succeeds in doing this but not without getting caught at the end. By the time the shooting assignment is over, Sapna and Pappu have got inexorably attracted to each other. So the story comes a full circle-the bad elements are exposed and punished, the hero and the heroine are tied into wedlock. The erring hero realises that his Dadi always meant well for him and is forgiven.
