Chetan was born in New Delhi to a typical middle class Punjabi family. His father was in the army and his mother was a government employee in the agricultural department. He has a younger sibling named Ketan Bhagat who works with Oracle in Mumbai.
Chetan's education was mostly in Delhi. He attended the Army Public School (1978–1991), Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi and then studied Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) Delhi (1991–1995). He graduated from the Indian Institute of Management(IIM) Ahmedabad (1995–1997), where he was named "The Best Outgoing Student". After graduation he worked as an investment banker in Hong Kong. He had been working in Hong Kong for 9 years before shifting to Mumbai to pursue his passion for writing. He has written 4 books so far and all of them have remained bestsellers till date.[10] Some of his books are said to be inspired from difficulties he encountered in his own life.
It is widely believed that 2 States, even though classified as fiction, is essentially inspired by Chetan's own marriage. When he was a student at IIM Ahmedabad he fell in love with a fellow student, Anusha Suryanarayan who is a Tamilian. They married, with their parents' consent, in 1998. Later they moved to Hong Kong and were working there. Now based in Mumbai, Chetan is focusing on his successful writing career. Chetan and Anusha are the parents of twin sons - Shyam and Ishaan. Chetan Bhagat is the author of four bestseller novels, Five Point Someone (2004), One Night @ the Call Center (2005), The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008) & 2 States (2009). All four books have remained bestsellers since their release and two have inspired Bollywood films (including the popular film 3 Idiots). In 2008, The New York Times called Chetan ‘the biggest selling English language novelist in India’s history. Seen more as a youth icon than just an author, thisIndian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi/ IIM Ahmedabad graduate is making India read like never before. Time Magazine named him as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.. Chetan also favoured the forming of a system similar to the Lokpal as early as January 2011 through his artcles.
Chetan writes op-ed columns for leading English and Hindi newspapers such as Times of India, Dainik Bhaskar etc., focusing on youth and issues based on national development. Many of the issues raised by Chetan’s columns have been discussed in Parliament and among the top leadership of the country. Chetan is also a popular Motivational Speaker and has given talks in leading MNC’s and other Institutions. He quit his international investment banking career in 2009, to devote his entire time to writing and make change happen in the country. Chetan lives in Mumbai with his wife Anusha Bhagat, an ex-classmate from IIM Ahmedabad, and his twin boys Shyam and Ishaan.
