Chandan Roychoudhury was born in 11th May 1948 in Kolkata. He was a student of Pandit Jasraj when he was studying H.S. His guru in Sitar was Master Ali Khan and Pt. Monilal Nag. He passes Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute and joined a company. He piano teacher was his mother; he was also a state level Hockey player. His father Rabi Roychoudhury was a music director and mother was a dance professor.
He went Japan for two times in 1970-71. He was the first person who brought Keyboard from Japan. He worked as a musician in 1972 for Y.S Mullick Film. He was a assistant music arranger of Nita Sen in 1975-76 for the film Pahari Phool. His first independent work was the film Kagajer Phool. Chandan was the first music director who trenched a song and that song was sang by Kishore Kumar in Mumbai.
Chandan worked as music director and arranger for 28 films. He worked with eminent directors like Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Asit Sen, Dinen Gupta. His music direction in Maha Prithibi, Sati, Kaka Babu, Here Gelam were appreciated by the critics. Apart from films he worked as music director in near about 150 tele films and serials. He is a selective music director. He did not work on many Hindi films except Gulbahar Singh’s “Duttack”, “Goal”. Now he is working in Chitrabani’s film “Mallickbari”.He won Anandalok and Pramathesh Barua Award.
His only son Wriju is working as a music director in Mumbai. Now his hobby is to search rare musics.
