  • Chase, at your own risk

Chase rating: 3 out of 10(Pritam Roy wrote on 30 Apr 2010)

Director Jag Mundhra may not have had many releases in the last couple of years. But, he had Apartment last week and now, he is Chase-ing you. Tagline of Chase is Think Fast...Run Faster...May be, what he meant is a Mutual Fund ad like disclaimer / warning for the audience. Think Fast, if you really want to watch the movie and Run faster from the theater / director or whoever wants you to get into the theaters.

Chase is a movie with a story or idea (if you are hesitant to call it a story) of 1980's when corruption, builder mafia, patriotism, good cop-bad cop thing, etc were ruling the roost. Now, it has been supplemented with super bikes of 21st century and other flashy props. And did I mention "oh-so common", innocent guy being framed for a crime, he has not committed? Oops! Did I give out the story. No-no, not as yet.

When acting index is low, the Director will try to confound the audience with some action scenes, which are picked from 51 other Hindi films, which you have seen, but can't remember the names. SO, to justify the name, the film begins with a chase (literally), but fizzles away soon. Sohail (Anuuj Saxena) is on the run, who is involved in a murder and also supposed to be a terrorist. Terrorism has become real cool with great perks, I must say.

DIG Ranveer (Rajesh Khattar) and Inspector Siddharth (Samir Kochhar) are behind Sohail to get him before someone else does. Yes, there are many more people chasing the hero...and am not even talking about the audience. There is Surabhee (Tarina Patel), Sohail's somewhat of a love interest and industrialist Mr. Khanna (Aditya Raj Kapoor) and Anthony D'Costa (Gulshan Grover),

The highlight of the story is a Hospital which is given the name of Neurological Research Center. Wonder, if any Hospital could have lent its name to this one, their patient intake would have sky-rocketed. The nurses come with no strings attached and value added services provided include strip tease, item number and other uncensored modes of entertainment. And all in the name of "therapy". Doctors, please step aside. Let the good nurses do their job. As expected, the hero lands up here, confused and comatosed with all the Chase-ing around. So, nurse Nupur (Udita Goswami), takes the responsibility of waking Sohail from his neurological slumber with more than required exposure, "as the script demanded" (even if the context is nonsensical). And when her efforts succeed, it's back to some Chase-ing. Finally, justice is meted out.

Obviously, you know the hero can't be the culprit, especially when he is "suspected" to be one. So, little to keep you hooked in terms of story line or "idea-line". Then, who is the culprit. If you really care about finding out the truth, you have to go to the theaters.

Sorry to say, Dr. Anuuj Saxena can't act. Maybe, he can be a good producer. But, if he gives up acting, he will do a great service to humanity. Because, by the time...he can possibly grasp the finer nuances of acting, audience would probably stop going to the theaters and watching films. I wonder, if no one talks about conflict of interest in terms of editing, when the Director (or his girl friend in some cases) is also one of the lead cast.

Udita can't emote even in her best seductress mode. There is little else for her to do. Tarina Patel can't act either. Now, Rajesh Khattar, Samir Kochhar & Aditya Raj Kapoor do their usual stuff. Gulshan Grover is OK in his small role. Music is strictly below average with the title number highlighting Chase, the only decent number.

Now guys, there are 2 options:

    1. Don't fast and get as far away as possible from the theaters
    2. Chase the director and film makers who make such films, hoping the audience will come to the theaters and watch.

    What will you do?

    Ok. Now it's Quiz time:

    1. What is common between Jag Mundhra and Aditya Raj Kapoor?
Ans: Both had two releases in last two weeks.

    2. What is common between Jag Mundhra and Aditya Raj Kapoor?
Ans: Last two films of both of them tanked without a trace!

    3. What is common between Jag Mundhra and Aditya Raj Kapoor?
What now? Ok. I gotta go. Both are Chase-ing me.
