    Chabi Biswas was a powerful actor of the Bengali silver screen.

    Chabi Biswas was born on 13th July, 1900 in Kolkata. His real name was Sachindranath De Biswas who later adopted this screen name. As a child, he had joined Kindergarten school. But later, he joined Central Collegiate School and finished his school examination from the historic Hindu School. For pursuing higher studies, he got admitted to Presidency College and later again joined Vidyasagar College. But he couldn’t complete his higher education. In 1929, he tied his knots with Niharbala Devi. Interestingly, he had lots of interest in Jute business and invested handsome amount in this business.

    In 1936 , he got his first break in the movie “ Annapurnar Mandir” directed by Tinkori Chakraborty. He gave one of his memorable performances in Satyajit Ray’s “Jalsaghar”, ‘Debi’, ‘Kanchanjhanga’. Due to his acute health crisis, he stepped away from acting from 1938 to 1950. After this long gap, he again joined his most loved workplace, Theatre and worked in Star theatre. His great performances in the ‘Sabar Upare’ ‘Saptapodi’, 'Khudita Pasan’, ‘Dada thakur’ are unforgettable. He had given some memorable performances in several theatres and stage shows also. He had directed two films and plays. In 1950s, he was the lead actor in innumerable stage shows and plays. In 1959, his hard work got rewarded and he received the much coveted Sangeet Natyak Award for Best Actor. As a tribute to this legend, Khankul Road was renamed as Chabi Biswas Sarani.
