Chhayamoy is a sweet little chldren’s film based on a story by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay about a heir, Indra Pratap(Gaurav) of a kingdom called Raidighi in a village called Simultala who comes to India for the first time to find a hidden treasure of his ancestors. He works in a library and he goes through several manuscripts and documents which helps him in his search. A friendly ghost called Chandra Das(known better known as Chhayamoy and played by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty)) who still lives in Simultala helps him in his journey. Indra Pratap is mistaken as a thief when he lands up in the house of a miserly moneylender who claims the mohurs(found by Indra Pratap)to be his and dreams of becoming rich. There are several other characters like the ageless ‘Gourgobindo’, ‘Kali’( the tantrik), ‘Ram’(the astrologer), Alankar( the child), Lakshman( the moneylender’s comic henchman) who helps it to make it an entertaining story.
Though this might be a ghost story of Sirshendu, however it is a film for kids which features a friendly ghost who always supports righteous people. Though Sabyasachi as Chhayamoy appears now and then and is okay, the performances of Shantilal Mukherjee as the tantrik , Deepanker Dey as the moneylender and Shantilal Mukherjee as the tantrik are worth mentioning because it is because of their performances that the film will do very well as they are simply excellent. It is a simple little story which has been told well to the audience and the audience will surely love it. However one couldn’t understand why Chhayamoy referred to Indra Pratap a couple of times as Indrajit or does he have two names, Indrajit as well as Indra Pratap?
