At a time when the Golden Era of the Bengali cinema started falling on the decadence owing to the burden of ages of the movie-Mughals, there came upon a lanky, slender-statured young man to add new dimension to comedy, very much time-tested. He is Chinmoy Roy, the name that has to generate laughter. Chinmoy Roy was born on January 16, 1940 . After his schooling he did his graduation with honours. He possessed an unputdownable zeal in acting. He left his job in Delhi. Following a span of ameture acting in theater, he joined the acclaimed Nandikar, led by Ajitesh Banerjee and Rudraprasad Sengupta. It was in the play "Manjari Amer Manjari", Chinmoy's brief but significant role arrested attention of Tapan Sinha, who put him in his film "Galpo Holeo Satyee". Meanwhile Satyajit Roy used him in his suspense thriller "Chiriakhana' in which Chinmoy acted the role of a dumb who is mysteriously murdered. It was followed by "Goopy Gayen Bagha Bayen". But, Chinmoy's worth came to light in "Ekhony", in which he acted a college youth who has taken to hippy-culture. His brilliant performance earned him the B.F.J.A award. In the film "Charmurti" he enacts the role of the much-read Teni-da. the leader of a group of young lads. His display of conceit, counterfeit bravery, sarcastic physical gestures and typical delivery of dialogues established him in the rank of the established comedians like Anup Kumar and Rabi Ghosh. In " Basanta Bilap"he qualified himself with level of humours of Soumitra Chatterjee, Anup Kumar, Rabi Ghosh.. In " Nani Gopaler Biye" he is in double role and hero opposite Jui Banerjee, whom he made his life partner. Chinmoy Roy is par haps the only comedian actor to have acted with the Bollywood actresses like Jaya Bhaduri( Sadhu Judhistirer Karch and Dhanni Meye), and Saira Banu (Sagina Mahato). Credited with more than hundred films, Chinmoy Roy has never imitated any of his predecessors, but displayed a style of his own. In this age he must be brooding over his salad days when he had the cronies like Anup Kumar, Rabi Ghosh, even the legends like Bhanu Banerjee and Johar Roy who have left for good . He is still active and prove his potentials, but a feeling of melancholia must be there.
