Widowed within a year of marriage, Binodini moves to Mahendra' s residence. Mahendra is the same man who had once offered his hand in marriage to her but she had refused. She meets Mahendra's wife Ashalata and the two become friends and term their relationship 'chokher bali'. Binodini the passive revolutionary develops an attraction towards Behari but when Mahindra approaches her, she reciprocrates his affections. Thus a chemistry develops between Mahendra and Binodini. The illiterate & simple Ashalata suspects no foul play until she accidentally comes across Binodini's love letter. A pregnant Ashalata is shell-shocked. She abandons her husband and goes to Varanasi. Mahendra's mother abuses Binodini and expels her from the house. A dejected Binodini after being dumped by the oppurtunist Mahendra goes to find refuge in Behari. But when she proposes marriage to him, Behari explains that he is dedicated to the cause of patriotism and to his principles. Binodini returns back to her cottage. Mahendra undergoes self-realization. Binodini asks Mahendra to take her to Varanasi as Behari is scheduled to be there. Mahendra feels cheated but still accompanies Binodini to her love. The duo reach Varanasi where they discover the abandoned Ashalata. Ultimately Behari arrives at the spot with the shocking news of Mahendra's mother's demise. Behari and Binodini meet at last. Behari proposes marriage to her. But the next morning when Behari arrives at Binodini's doorsteps, her finds that the tantalising lady has already left. Behari never finds Binodini. Mahendra brings Ashalata back. Behari plunges into his patriotic commitments.
