  • Ritojit and Priyanka okay, Laboni good

Chupi Chupi rating: 5 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 12 Jun 2013)

Ghotis and Bangals, represent the people of West Bengal and East Bengal. They are sort of rivals in every sphere of life specially when it comes to the game of football(Ghotis support Mohun Bagan since they are from West Bengal and Bangals support East Bengal since they are from East Bengal) and they love their prawns and hilsas respectively and can go to any length to fight over it.

Chupi Chupi is a one such film about Ghotis and Bangals. Gourabh(Ritajit) and Jonaki(Priyanka) love each other but there are problems since one is from a Bangal family and one is from a Ghoti family. Jonaki goes to Kolkata with a job to get away from her father and joins a company where she meets up with Gourabh who incidentally also works there . However the main problem lies with the owner of the house where Jonaki stays who is known as ‘Hitlerdidi’. Hitlerdidi or Maya(Laboni Sarkar) can’t stand the sight of men and thinks women should have nothing to do with them and the same rule applies to her house. Jonaki and the 2 girls who are her roommates feel claustrophobic. However it is discovered that Kajal Mukherjee, the boss of Gourabh and Jonaki is actually Maya’s husband and how Gourabh and Jonaki bring Maya and Kajal together and how Maya even changes completely remains to be seen.

The tale is a familiar one and we have seen similar films before , however the Ghoti and the Bangal factor is just touched upon and not nurtured properly. Ritojit and Priyanka(practically newcomers though Ritojit has acted in Mama Square and Priyanka has acted in Har Mana Har before) are much better than other newcomers and if Priyanka can reduce a bit, she will do just fine. Manashi Sinha as Sanata is good in a role which is natural to her, but she is a bit too loud. Laboni Sarkar is excellent as Maya or ‘Hitlerdidi’, the lady who undergoes several emotional changes to her characters as life makes her undergo certain changes. Kaushik Banerjee also plays a positive(generally he plays negative characters) character quite well and the overall film is watchable.
