    Shitty being sold…..

City Of Gold rating: 3 out of 10

Mahesh Manjrekar started his career with different film called “Nidaan” and later gave some super hits like Vaastav, Aastitva, Viruddh and few more. In all films he portrayed the middle class Indian in different situation. The genre belonging to Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee was potryed by Mahesh Manjrekar in a different manner with tales of Violence and boldness. Slowly he started being repetitive and thus lost the charm. He focused himself to Acting and few years back banged the box office with his Marathi hit films. Now after almost after a half decade he ... » read more

    City of some reality!

City Of Gold rating: 5 out of 10

This movie, directed by the talented man Mr. Mahesh Manjrekar, has its own and different impact to the audiences. The story and the life of the mill workers, who wouldn’t be interested in such kind of hard topic. As the topic is so hard, interesting and challenging; three general things are very important to look after; performance, story and direction. In other kind of films, if one of the following is weak, then also the film can be made interesting and watchable. But in such kind of hard topic, these all three are very-very important. Let’s see now the Mahesh Manjrekar ... » read more

Gold is Gold…but no gold is 100% pure though…

Manjerakar’s take on this critical era in Mumbai’s history is diluted by uneven writing, excessive melodrama, feeble attempts at comedy and an inane ending, which undermines everything that has gone before. The film-maker completely reinvents himself with City of Gold: a hard-hitting, intense, unapologetic, yet heart-warming documentation of what the changing skyline of Mumbai has actually entailed. Manjrekar persuasively highlights the piteous and penniless plight of millworkers; he touches the politics of the plot only peripherally thereby losing on the immense potential ... » read more

    Just because of some performances…

City Of Gold rating: 6 out of 10

It is the performances which makes this film. Manjrekar elicits fine performances from his largely unknown cast – Karan Patel as Naru, Veena Jamkar as Manju and Siddharth Jhadav as Speed breaker are especially good. He shoots his characters’ emotions in tight comprehensive close-ups but wastes no time shedding excessive tears over their lives.

The real stars of this film are other faces, some of whom we see for the first time in a Hindi feature : Veena Jamkar, the daughter who goes from one starving mill worker to another, Karan Patel, her hot-headed brother who ... » read more

Mahesh Manjrekar’s City of Gold takes a neo-realistic look at the downfall of the textile mills and its workers that reigned supreme three decades ago in Lalbaug-Parel (that’s the title of the Marathi version of the film), the heart of Mumbai. But what could have been classic cinema ends up being commercial celluloid. While Manjrekar persuasively highlights the piteous and penniless plight of millworkers, he touches the politics of the plot only peripherally thereby losing on the immense potential of tapping the capitalist corruption that led to the collapse of an entire ... » read more
