EXPECTATIONS - 2012 is no doubt a hugely successful year for Bollywood Music. Starting from Agneepath to Shanghai - everything related to success fell right in its place in the soundtracks of the movies. Cocktail comes with a reminder of Pritam-Illuminati jodi which is excessively successful due to examples like LOVE AAJ KAL & AGENT VINOD. COCKTAIl looked very refreshing and appealing from the trailer and promos and the song videos were fun and vibrant. And "TUMHI HO BANDHU" & "DAARU DESI" are already hits. Even though the soundtrack doesn't include "ANGREJI BEAT" by Yo Yo Honey Singh & Gippy Grewal featured in the trailer, it still has 10 tracks including Reprised & second versions. Does it impress? It was hugely expected.
COMPOSER (Of All Songs) : PRITAM CHAKRABORTY
LYRICIST (Of All Songs) : IRSHAD KAMIL
Song No. 1 - TUMHI HO BANDHU
Contributing Artist(s) - NEERAJ SRIDHAR and KAVITA SETH
Kick Start for the album with a party track with 'mukhra's inspired from devotional number 'Tumhi Ho Bandhu. What an Idea Sirji! But Neeraj Sridhar's follow-up voiceover and Kavita Seth's strikingly good vocal gives birth to a turbulent party number with a loosen up atmosphere. The rhythm is so beautifully brought up that the song instantly catches nerves and gets high on you. A winner for the album.
Song No.2 - DAARU DESI
Contributing Artist(s) - BENNY DAYAL and SHALMALI KHOLGADE -
The 'Pareshaan' famed female voice Shalmali Kholgade comes back and this time pritam's lucky to catch her for a deadly song. Benny Dayal is always a beautiful and different kind of male which fits with any kind of track magically. If you listen to DAARU DESI then it will remind you of "CHOOMANTAR" from 'Mere brother Ki Dulhan'. Just like that, DAARU DESI has the fun feeling with the essence of friendship and it gives a feeling of illusion and scenic freshness at the same time. Beautiful song.
Song No.3 - YAARIYAAN
Contributing Artist(s) - MOHAN KANAN and SHILPA RAO -
Sadness is a common part in Bollywood Songs. YAARIYAAN resembles some different kind of sadness that also has connection with depression and dissatisfaction. 'RAABTA' from 'Agent Vinod', 'KUCH KUM' from 'DOSTANA', 'AAHATEIN' from 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' more or less sound very close to Yaariyaan. But stil Yaariyaan is also another great emotional track with mesmerizing voice of Mohan Kanan & none other than Shilpa Rao which follows the victory of the album. If you like more mildness and will like to hear this song in a more soulful way, then listen to the 'Reprised' version of the song as it is more beautiful in a melancholic way. The male and female parts of the song gets replaced here as the most portion of the 'Reprised' version is sing by Sunidhi Chauhan & Arijit Singh's guest vocal gives a warm feeling.
Song No.4 - SECOND HAND JAWAANI
Contributing Artist(s) - MISS POOJA, NEHA KAKKAR and NAKKASH AZIZ -
Just like the title, the factor which works for this track is its wacky and psychic lyrics which mean absolutely nothing but has some great words like "Ayaashi Ki Computer Ka Processor", "Duniya Sunegi Ab Yeh Aakahsvaani" etc. This song is a full on mixture of beats, bhangra, bhajan and bass. Will work wonders in the aggressive surface.
Song No. 5 - TERA NAAM JAPDI PHIRAN
Contributing Artist(s) - JAVED BASHIR, NIKHIL D SOUZA and SHEFALI ALVARIS -
Just what was required, a crazy disco number like 'Subah Hone Na De' from 'Desi Boyz'. 'Tera Naam Japdi Phiran' features very freshly famed voices but most of the song is sung by Javed Bashir. Shefali's short "I'm A Bad Bad Girl..." voice-over and Nikhil's English rap shines the song and work like an ornament for the song. Anyway, you can't dislike this song because just like any other drug, it grows on you. This one also has a remixed version and let me tell you, this one's one of those remix tracks which go neck-by-neck with the original one and confuses you in figuring out the better one. The same case happened with Shanghai's 'Khudaaya'. This one's nothing different.
Song No. 6 - LUTTNA (SAIF UL MALOOK)
Contributing Artist(s) - MASUMA ANWAR, SAHIR ALI BUGGA and ANUPAM AMOD -
Well, this one's a certain kind of track which is in my views, the first of a kind in Bollywood. The song starts with calm sufi feeling then suddenly distortion starts and the calmness gets hindered a bit but catches track very cleverly. Since then the track becomes a cocktail of distortion, sufi, rock, sadness and qawaali. The distortion parts catch most attention but the skillful handling of various portions of the song is the part which is most impressing. The "Luttna" part is the best. A very surprising track and I look forward to see where does this kind of track work on the movie. 'Luttna' has a second version which mostly follows a soulful rhythm.
Song No. 7 - JUGNI
Contributing Artist(s) - ARIF LOHAR and HARSHDEEP KAUR -
Don't get confused with the 'Tanu Weds Manu' one which was also a great song in all respect. 'Jugni' is a treat for Punjabi song lovers and this one also has huge similarity with the TANU WEDS MANU track in rhythm. But the distortion part works here more. Arif Lohar & Harshdeep's vocals were astonishing.
COCKTAIL is undoubtedly one of the best music albums of 2012 where nearly all of the tracks work perfectly. It is very challenging to succeed when you have too many tracks in hand and you have to make all or most of them conquer and that's where COCKTAIL is a winner. The vibrancy, profundity, Infrastructure and contrast of the whole album is so unblemished that it holds its head high among recent successful music albums. On the whole, The music of Cocktail gradually grows on you, relish it, sustain it, enjoy it.
