The movie is about two Cops, who have no time for their family, but all the time for each other. They sort of have a relationship, where they give each other anniversary cards and crack puerile adult jokes, and some of which you get and some of which you don't.
So, while Jimmy's (Bruce Willis) wife left him for another rich guy, Paul (Tracy Morgan) is under the suspicion, that his wife is having an affair with his neighbour. And also, they goof up big time on their job, which leads to them being suspended. In between chasing goons, they also share a strong camaraderie where they play games on remembering movie lines / dialogues in the most unexpected places. They almost look like two stand up comedians playing cops.
But, Jimmy has a daughter who is about to get married and wants a big fat wedding and he needs money. So, he takes out his card, which he has held close to his chest since childhood...literally a celebrity baseball card...the auction of which could finance the wedding and more. But, they bungle things again and the card gets stolen and get involved in chasing the drug mafia kingpin who gets his kick by killing offenders in the gang at the church and other places in strange, crooked ways. And after usual humdrum, which involves a standard car chase, where cars get banged and bullets get sprayed with such accuracy, that not a single one manages to come close to the cops...they get to the bottom of the conspiracy. Obviously, they redeem themselves and get back their jobs and Jimmy's daughter also has the wedding of her dreams, while Paul gets his wife back.
It's strictly a boy's movie, entirely made to booster the male ego. As even if you are not slogging 25 hrs in a day like Jimmy and Paul for a cop's job, you may be working long hours in your cubicle. Honestly, I don't understand Tracy Morgan kind of jokes, where he says "No" in 37 different ways at a stretch and I am supposed to laugh at the end of it!
The direction and screenplay is average. There is limited scope for displaying great acting talent. Action scenes look like any other cop movie. But, if you kind of enjoy a boys' day out after some beer, you can go and watch the movie.
One positive distraction in the movie is the hot Latino girl, Gabriela (Ana de la Reguera), who plays a small role of the Mexican druglord's mistress. She reminds me of Penelope Cruz / Salma Hayek. I would definitely like to see more of her in future.
Here is a trivia: the movie was earlier titled A Couple of Dicks. It was changed later and the powerful cable networks in US could not showcase any trailer or ads related to the movie in the important prime time band and Warner Bros had to change the name. The earlier name could be a strong hint to keep off some people from the theaters here, too. And don't tell me...I didn't warn you.
This matches with my rating for the movie: A Couple of stars. :-)
P.S. Can't help thinking of a Bollywood remake. What about Munnabhai duo or considering the comedian aspect, even Salman and Sohail Khan could be considered. Any ideas?
