As per from the other sources, the film was released overseas on October 2009, and now it’s being released in India on January 2010. The only main attraction by which the Indian Audience would go for this movie would be just that the music is being composed by the Legend A R Rahman. In around February 2009 he achieved an Oscar Award for the film “Slumdog Millionaire” and this film was released on October 2009. That is the film was released after the achievement with a gap of 6months. But the moral is, the music is simple and decent. More comments on music will be below. Let us discuss besides music and is also equally something important.
It’s the story of about four friends; Dave, Jason, Shane & Joey. Dave, Jason and Joey are married and Shane was recently divorced and having a new girlfriend which was half to his age. Now Jason and his wife Synthia love each other very much but are planning to get divorced because their relationship isn’t working the way it should be. Now before getting a divorce they both planned to go on a vacation at the “Eden World” (a hill station something far from city). But the problem was that if they go alone then the budget was very high and they could not afford, but if all four friends with their respective partners would come along then the trip would quite cheaper.
Now all of the four agreed to go on a vacation trip to the “Eden World” with some drama and emotional situation in the story. And after they reach there, they got to know that they had signed up for the wrong side. That means the Eden World has two zones, the west one and the east one. Eden east zone is the party zone, jet skis, fun, pokers, casino, and etc. Whereas the west zone ahs the “Couple Skill Budding Program” and all, where in this they had to wake up and 6am in the morning and follow the program to improve your relationship with the partner. When they all realized this and wanted to go on the east zone, the manager of the Hotel refused to give their refunds, which was not so good to them.
So finally they all said yes to this program, and later all the funny moments started which they were facing during this program. But also all the emotional and understanding scenes started among couples which they were facing in their normal routine life, and realized that they need to work on this to improve their relationship. Dave and his wife were a workaholic and work for hours and hours and realized that they are not spending time with each other and enjoying the small little things. Jason and his wife love each other but something there was missing their relationship and that’s why they first decided to get a divorce. Joey was attracted to other women’s and that’s why he was cheating mentally on his wife and so does his wife decided to do that. Shane got a recently divorced with his wife Jennifer, and now trying to maintain a new relationship again and again with every new other girl, the current one was Trudy; he was just trying to change himself for other.
At the end, it was all settled down, everybody was happy; everybody got what they really want and what they deserve. Just exactly what happen in all love stories or in all marriage relationship stories.
Story is very simple, very common and very much expected. The screenplay was a bit funny at times but can’t be given rating more than an average. The only most funnier scene which I got was the one where Trudy says to Shane “I always say to my every boyfriend Daddy”. Also the one where Dave’s son peeing everytime in a shopping mall in a bathroom and accessories section. Rest everything was Ok, and the climax was also sweet and decent.
Music given by the Legend A R Rahman was simply Ok. Was not at all looking like the Legend A R Rahman did the music. It was clearly being felt that some Indian had done music, where it should be felt like some Hollywood professional had done the music. In some scenes there were only plane Sitar and Tablas were being played, where the scene was on the beach. The whole feel of beach was gone by that. Also in many scenes it was looking like some 80’s Hindi filmy music is being played on every dramatic situation. And also I would like to mention that there was a theme of “Guru” movie starring Abhishek Bachchan was being played in one of the scene, when they arrived first time to the “Eden World”.
Performances by each every character was good, especially by the extremely talented Jean Reno, who played as the Program teacher cum guider. Direction by Actor turned Director Mr. Peter Billingsley was an averagely good. As a Director this was his second film after “The Sacred Fire” which he made and was released in 1994. After a gap of nearly about 15yrs, the actor came back into direction. Apart for some continuity jerks in Editing and for some bloopers in some scenes, the rest of the technicalities can be considered an average or below average.
There are many other films with are almost same or similar topic, and which are obviously worth watching. But this film is barely watchable for one time only, and also for the limited audience, which are couple normally. Also the wise suggestion would be not spending heavy money of multiplexes and if wish to can see it at Home Theatre. In short, “Couples Retreat” is a treat for only couples, but can’t be re-treated again.
2.5 / 5 (Just an Average)
