Sudeshna Roy and Avijit Guha′s first released directorial film “CROSS CONNECTION” is little more than a fun-telefilm. It is not cinema. The problem with the directors who have graduated to cinema from television is that they initially can not distinguish between the two media. They believe it is only the size of the screen. Sudeshna and Avijit fall in the same trap.
Iman (Rimjhim Mitra) got cross-connected with Vicky (Abir Chatterjee). Iman was actually desperately trying to contact her boy-friend Aakash (Ritwick Chakraborty) and Vicky was waiting for her sister (Kamalini) and brother-in-law (Saswata Chatterjee) who were coming to pick him up from airport.
And that Cross-Connection is the basis of the entire story. Basically the director-duo wanted to make a romantic comedy and they are quite successful in doing that, but the entire thing seemed suitable for small screen. The screenplay, the shot divisions, the dialogues-are all apt for television viewers.
Iman decided to leave Aakash. Her mother got relieved became she never thought Aakash, a vagabond, could be her son-in-law. At that time Iman got connected with Vicky who had only a couple of months left before he leaves for Toronto. At the same time Aakash met Piya (Payel) who was trying to go to USA for higher studies.
Iman-Vicky and Piya- Aakash started romancing, but the major problem was neither Iman nor Aakash could erase the memories of their past relationship. In spite of that, all of them took it for granted, that as they would be marrying in near future, so why not know each other more intimately before marriage. So Iman – Vicky and piya – Aakash decided to do a premarital honeymoon at Mandarmoni.
At Mandarmani we experienced the first long shot of the film. We saw vast sea in a shot-and by then more than an hour has already passed of the two hour long film.
Both Ritwick and Rimjhim stole the show. It is sad that Abir and Payel didn′t get equal footage, as the story is centering around Ritwick and Rimjhim. In a cameo Sudip Mukherjee played the role of a police officer, incidentally whose name is Bapi sen.
Saswata, Kamalika and Biswajit have done their roles at ease because these roles they do each and every day.
Neil Dutta has composed the music. Only one song sung and written by Anjan Dutta is worth remembering. Sudeshna and Avijit′s unreleased first film “Teen yari katha” was a better product than this one. So, I have a belief that the director duo are capable of doing better films.
