Damu Kenkre was born on May 5, 1940. He is a noted Marathi theatre personality.
Hamlet, Suryachi Pille and Akhercha Sawaal are some of Kenkre's most famous plays. He was known for his contribution to the experimental theatre. Kenkre received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1974 and the Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar a few years ago. He was ex-Director of Cultural Affairs Govt of Maharashtra
Lalita Kenkre, wife of Damu Kenkre, took acting classes with Parshwanath Altekar and performed in Musicals, as well as several Marathi and Gujrati films.
In october, 2007, he had suffered through paralysis attack but he had recovered. He also suffered through prostate gland. On his last birthday, he shifted to a new residence at Vile parle from previous residence in kalanagar, Bandra. After suffering for some time, he passed away on Sept 28 of heart attack.
He Left behind his wife Lalitabai, son Vijay & daughter-in-law Mangal.
