After passing M.A, Amarnath Chowdhury, zamindar of Prosadpur, decided to live in the village. He had deep knowledge of bengali and sanskrit language. He also respected indian culture and ideology. He brought-up her two daughters according to his own ideology. Elder daughter mma? was a child-widow and very religions. Younger daughter Usha was very restless compared to her age. Manish was a London-returned college professor. He was son of Amarnath’s friend. Manish’s friend Mrinmoy was a foreign returned doctor. Mrinmoy’s father Prasanna babu was a retired district judge. But due to his extravagant nature, he was in debt. When Manish brought a proposal of Mrinmoy’s marriage with Usha, Prasanna babu thought in the long run, Usha’s son would be the share holder of Prosadpur zamindar and immediately aggreed to the proposal. Mrinmoy had reservations regarding that marriage, Amarnath’s anut bagala ?sati was also against this marriage, but ultimately agreed after seeing interests of Manish’s sister Bani and Uma. After marriage Usha could never adjust with the western centure of the father-in-law . So Mrinmoy sent Usha to a foreigner lady’s boarding to get acquainted with that culture. Usha had no scope to visit Prasadpur. A few months later Manish brought the news that Usha was expected. Uma and Bagala Debi came to Calcutta with Manish to meet Usha and bring back to Prasadpur. But Mrinmoy didn’t allow Uuha to go to Prasdpore. Become ?amarnath haved? everything about usha’s comlition ?. He was worried. He made a will and donated all his property in the name of god and made Uma its caretaker. Amarnath kept this a secret. A son was born to Usha. One day Lalababu one of the debtor, informed Prasanna babu about the secret will of Amarnath. One day Amarnath came to see Usha and his grand son. Prasanna babu insulted Amarnath badly. Amarnath was so shocked that he died. Uma had a wish to handover all the property to Usha after the shraddh ceremony, but as both Mrinmoy and Usha said some fitter words about Amarnath, Uma druiev ? however the property ? to them. Usha and Mrinmoy filed a law-suit against Uma. Prasanna babu’s daughter Sati protested against this she was thrown one of the lover ? sati loved manish ?. When in the court Usha are ? Mrinmoy some filthy statements concening Manish and Uma, Sati gave her identity to the would be wife of Manish. Manish also agreed to this when Prasanna babu understood that there would be a definite defeat in the law-contest, he decided to commit suicide. Heaning this Uma repaid all the wans ? of Prasanna babu, and gave the vest ?of property to Usha’s son and after that she left for Benaras.
