    Danny Denzongpa was born on 25th February, 1948, in the independent state of Sikkim. His mother tongue is Bhutia.

    His love of horses and horse riding began at an early age, as his family was into horse breeding . He also wanted to join the Indian Army, and was training for the same, however, post the Indo - China War, his mother convinced him to drop the idea of joining the military. Danny then enrolled in the Film institute in Pune.

    He started his career by singing Nepali songs and acting in Indian Nepali movies.He got his major break in Hindi movies with Gulzar's Mere Apne, and later in B. R. Chopra's Dhund where he played a crippled and frustrated husband. He has acted in numerous Hindi films. He has also undertaken a few International projects, the most famous being Seven Years in Tibet which also featured Brad Pitt.

    He was the original choice for the role of Gabbar Singh in Sholay but had to back out because of a clash of dates. The character later became an icon and became one of the most known villians in hindi films.

    In 2003, Denzongpa was awarded the Padma Shree, India's fourth highest civilian honour given by India.
