Dara Singh was a well-known wrestler before he joined Hindi films. He became the wrestling champion of India before winning the world championship crown. He was also known as "Rustom-E-Hind" which was also made into a movie later on.

He made his debut with the film "King Kong" in 1962. This film was highly appreciated and thereafter came many movies where he played roles of similar type. Some of his movies like "Rustom-E-Rome" (1963), "Rustom-E-Baghdad" (1962) and "Rustom-E-Hind" (1964) did Well. There were many other films of his like "Aaya Toofan", "Sher-E-Watan", 'Shankar Khan' and 'Balraj Shri Krishna' in the same.

His most famous role in Hindi films as a character role was that in film "Mard", directed by Manmohan Desai. In this film he played the role of Amitabh Bachchan's father. However, the role which endeared himself to the masses was one on the small screen, that of "Hanuman" in Ramanand Sagar's popular television serial '"Ramayan".

Though quite old, Dara Singh played the role to perfection and people started recognising him as the actual "Hanuman". He then started doing more of serials and gained popularity.

Dara Singh turned producer at one time of his career and churned out Punjabi movies like "Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar" which did well in the Northern part of the country.
