David Dhawan is an Indian film director. His real name is Rajinder Dhawan. He always wanted to join films. After finishing his college, he studied at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

David Dhawan started his career in films as an editor. His first film as an editor was Oh Bewafa (1980). He later worked on several big films like Souten (1983), Saaransh (1984) and Naam (1986) among many others before he finally decided to venture into direction. His directorial debut was Taaqatwar (1989) starring Govinda and Sanjay Dutt.

David Dhawan first struck gold with Swarg (1990), a family drama starring Rajesh Khanna, Govinda and Juhi Chawla. His Shola Aur Shabnam was released in 1992 and went on to be a huge huge hit. And with Aankhen (1993), David Dhawan reached new heights of success. Inspired from Do Phool (1973), Aankhen was the biggest hit of 1993, and David Dhawan hasn’t looked back ever since. He established himself as a successful comedy film maker with many rib-tickling comedy films with Govinda.

David Dhawan formed a pair with Govinda and did many more successful films like Raja Babu (1994), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Hero No. 1 (1997). Although David Dhawan also directed many other hit films like Bol Radha Bol (1992), Judwaa (1997) and Deewana Mastana (1997), it was his capers with Govinda that were loved the most by the audience. With Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan (1998), David Dhawan brought Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan together on screen doing comedy. As a result, the film was a huge hit. David Dhawan made Biwi no. 1 which was the biggest hit of 1999. He then made a triology of comedies with the Govinda-Sanjay Dutt team – Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999), Jodi no. 1 (2001) and Ek aur Ek Gyarah (2003) out of which the first two were big hits. Meanwhile, all the other films made by David dhawan for next 5 years – be it Chal Mere Bhai (2000), Kyonki Main Jhooth nahi Bolta (2001) or Yeh Hai Jalwa (2002), bombed at the box-office. However, David dhawan came back into limelight with his next two films Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005) proving to be big-time money spinners. Although he saw failure again with Shaadi no. 1 (2005), his Partner starring Govinda and Salman Khan more than made up for it and went on to be one of the biggest hits of 2007.

He is busy with Tom and Jerry starring Govinda and Salman Khan which is a sequel to Partner, and Do Knot Disturb (starring Govinda and Sushmita Sen) for Vashu Bhagnani. Also awaiting are projects for UTV and the remake of Amar Akbar Anthony.

He is married to Karuna Dhawan and has two children Rohit and Varun. His brother Anil Dhawan is a famous film actor. He judged a reality show Nach Baliye3 (2007) aired on Star Plus.
