Death Proof is a 2007 action flick written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film is also known by other titles such as Grindhouse Presents: Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, Grindhouse: Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's Thunder Bolt and Thunder Bolt. For my sanity, I’ll call the film Death Proof.

Death Proof, more than a movie, is a tribute to film genres of the 70s like muscle cars, exploitation and slasher, amongst others. In essence, Death Proof is the story of a psychopathic stuntman, who calls himself Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), who for some reason murders young women by staging car accidents. He drives a stunt-car, which he say is death proof, and hence the title.

The movie is played out in two parts. In the first part, Stuntman Mike stalks a group of sexy babes in Austin, Texas before killing them through a staged car crash. That car crash sequence is something that shouldn’t be missed. It has been filmed in the most awesome way, catching the reactions of all four passengers of the car and then showing how they die. The scene blew me away. Super! I kept going back and watched it a dozen times but am still amazed by it. In the second part, the second set of babes Stuntman Mike stalks get the better of him, and the way the greasy old bastard is overwhelmed would make you jump up and cheer the chicks.

Death Proof is not the kind of film that would appeal to everyone. In fact, it won’t appeal to a large majority. The film bores you, then it excites you, then it bores you again, and excites you again… in exactly that sequence. A large portion of Death Proof has dialogues, but if you sit back patiently, you realize that the dialogues are fun too. Tarantino’s films have always had a lot of talking, but the thing that most people miss is that the conversations that his characters have are as entertaining as the action in the film. You just need to sit back, and decide that you won’t get bored. The patience is worth the superb stunts that follow.

Death Proof is a self-indulgent film. It has been made as a tribute, not for box office glory. It should be seen and enjoyed for its stunts, action, characterizations, storytelling, acting and very good direction. And of course, that car crash sequence.
