Debesh Chattopadhyay associated himself with theatre since 1984. He worked in productions like Ballabhpurer Roopkatha (Play : Badal Sircar ), Raktakarabi ( Rabindranath Tagore ), Mareech Sambad ( Play : Arun Mukhopadhyay ), Griha Yuddha ( Buddhadev Dasgupta ) etc.
In 1992 he joined Ganakrishti and acted in the production ‘Manyobor Bhool Korchen’ based on Reginalt Rosse’s ‘Twelve Angry Men’.
Next group was Theatron. Two years at a strech he worked as a production assistant to Shri Salil Bandopadhay which enriched Debesh’s thoughtshop.
In 1995, Debesh formed a group named Arindam and they the play ‘Dwicharini’ was premeired.
As a director :
In the year 1998 he formed Theatre Canvas Kolkata and took the responsibility in directing plays like Hayabadan (Girish Karnad) and Look Back in Anger (John Osborne).
In the year 2000 Sansriti launched their first production Pratinidhi (The Representative) — Playwright : Debasish Mazumdar and directed by Debesh Chattopadhayay.
The year 2002 was a history in Bengali group theatre world. Sansriti created it with their still full house production WINKLE TWINKLE and it was directed by Debesh.
In the year 2004 Debesh directed PHATARU based on Nabarun
Bhattacharya’s story .
In the year 2005 Sansriti produces a workshop based
production CADAVEROUS under his guidance.
In the year 2006 Debesh directed an intimate play ANWAY.
Again In 2006 Debesh is directed YE, play based on story by peter bischel
and a short play SHYAMASUNDARI by G B SHAW.
In 2007 Debesh directed Surjo-pora chai, written also by Debesh & a short
play TETRI KAHANI, story by MAHASWETA DEVI.
In 2008,DEBESH directed a STREET PLAY FANDI GRAM.
As a Documentary Film Maker
Debesh Chattopadhyay made a documentary film on Satu Sen which is financed by the National School of Drama, Delhi.
As an Actor
Debesh acted in various theatre,soaps & films.
Debesh Chattopadhayay was also awarded the ‘Best Playwright of the Year’ by West Bengal Youth Council for his play Surya Pora Chchai. (Sun Burnt Ashes) & felicitated in almost all major theatre festival of Bengal including NANDIKAR & N S D.
In 2003 Debesh Chattopadhyay was honoured as one of the 50 Emerging
Stars of India by The Week (Independence Day special Issue).
