Four guys vying for the love of a girl. One is a typical loverboy completely smitten with her. The second is an investigator with a fickle conscience. The other two are disabled people who in reality are absolutely fit but pretend their disability to make way into the girl's heart by winning her sympathy. In this pentagon of love, there is fun, laughter, action, romance, glamour and gloss.
The humour in the movie is slapstick, but it is churned out of funny situations and the game of up-manship that the characters in the movie play.
The film begins with the campus romance between Karan (Shahid Kapur) and Tanya (Rimi Sen). Karan is absolutely enamoured with Tanya, but she leaves the country after she accidentally witnesses the murder of a scientist.
The killed scientist (Om Puri) had the codeword to a secret formula that makes a person younger. The scientist's twin brother (Om Puri, again) is a don who is searching desperately for the code to the formula.
The code is with Tanya, but she is not aware of it.
Even after a long separation, Karan is unable to forget Tanya. Inspired by his boss cum friend Murugan (Johnny Lever) he decides to find her out. He discovers that she is in Dubai and hires an investigator named Rocky (Akshay Kumar) to trace her.
In Dubai, Rocky succeeds in finding Tanya. She has changed her name to Natasha. But the flamboyant investigator in turn loses his own heart to her the minute he sees her. So he cooks up a story to Karan that Tanya is now a widow with several children.
But there are more wannabes for Tanya/Natasha's love. There is the disabled Sanjay (Sunil Shetty) who wears a sorry expression on his face all the time and pretends his handicap to win her love. There is the confused Tommy (Paresh Rawal) who shams the loss of his memory.
The three contenders for Tanya's love try to outfox each other in every possible way. In the meantime, Karan too comes to Dubai. The chaos and mayhem reaches a new high when the don's men also arrive on the scene to search for the formulas codeword.
Deewane Huye Paagal is a hearty entertainer that brings about a right balance between fun, romance and action. Although the movie looks highly inspired from the Hollywood comedy Theres Something About Mary, director Vikram Bhatt has given a nice Indian touch to the basic plot and comedy.
Akshay Kumar once again proves his mettle when it comes to tickling the funny bone. His comic sense and timing seems to be getting better with every film. His sequence with the dog leaves you in splits and his stunts at the end are awe-inspiring.
Shahid Kapur plays a lover boy to the hilt. There is not much humour coming forth from the young actor. He underplays his character and enacts a Romeo (with a slight twinkle in his eyes) with conviction. His dance skills in the competition song (with Akshay) are a delight to watch.
Sunil Shetty's comedy in this movie is more because of his body language than his dialogues.
Paresh Rawal, as usual, is funny in his act. His sequence with Sunil Shetty when the two are at the shooting of a music video is truly hilarious.
Rimi Sen plays her part well, but needs to be presented more beautifully. Some of her dresses in the movie are simply dull.
On the sidelines, Johnny Lever (as Shahid's friend) and Vijay Raaj (as Akshay's sidekick) chip in good comedy in the edgeways.
Aftab Shivdasani makes a cameo appearance at the end.
In a nutshell, Deewane Huye Paagal is yet another addition to the list of successful Bollywood comedies this year. The movie has an interesting story, hilarious characters and funny situations aplenty. The humour, primarily kitschy, works quite well.
