    Waheeda Rehman was approached for the mother's role in 'Deewar'. Since Yash Chopra had already cast her in 'Kabhi Kabhie' as Amitabh Bachchan's wife, he was worried about public reaction to her playing the role of Amitabh Bachchan's mother, if 'Kabhi Kabhie' released before 'Deewar'.

    Yash Chopra wanted to cast Rajesh Khanna for the role of Vijay Verma in 'Deewar'. However, writer duo Salim-Javed insisted on the role being given to Amitabh Bachchan, because of their earlier misunderstanding with Rajesh Khanna.

    Apparently Amitabh met Haji Mastan to study his mannerisms fo his character in this movie. It is said that Haji Mastan came to mumbai at the age of 17 and started working as a coolie on the docks and went on to become powerful and indispensable to local political circle which is quite similar to the role played by Amitabh in Deewar.

    Deewar is remembered for its powerful dialogue (Salim-Javed) and performances by the lead actor Amitabh Bachchan who was ably supported by Shashi Kapoor, playing the role of his younger brother. Amitabh Bachchan's character, Vijay Verma, is said to have been based on the life of the Mumbai gangster, Haji Mastan Mirza.

    Pancham had recorded 6 songs for Deewaar, out of which only 4 could make it to the film. However, the two that never made it to the film did make it to the LPs and the cassettes: idhar ka maal udhar and deewaaron ke jungle. A major strength of the film was its fantastic background score.

    Master Alankar, who plays junior Vijay and grows up to be Amitabh, is also the brother of Pallavi Joshi. Alankar did not take up acting as a career when he grew up, except some TV serials like Chhoti Badi Baatein

    When Vijay (Amitabh) meets Ravi (Shashi) at the Bridge and Ravi says "Mere Paas Maa Hai", the song that plays at the background is "Saare Jaahan Se Achcha", which Ravi is also shown singing as a child in school.
