Sashibhusan is a middle aged blind poet and intellectual. He spends his time with his old assistant Nibaran, the new tenant Sarama and her son Suman. Sarama is married to Nikhil, a famous artist, but fame and success have changed their relationship. Nikhil has started to neglect her. Sashi's married life is also not a successful one. He was married to his college mate Reba Mullick, a beautiful singer but they are divorced now. Sashi's affair with a number of girls and Reba's extra marital affair with Barun leads to the seperation. Reba leaves the house with their only daughter Sohini and goes to USA. Sashi has another old friend to chat with - Ashesh, his classmate who is a successsful businessman. He visits this house often and the old comrades discuss politics, music etc. Rimi Dutta, a young and beautiful girl often visits Sashi's house for publishing a little magazine. She is also a writer and a big admirer of Sashi's poems. She has not paid the dues and so Nibaran threatens to stop the work. Sashi is quite impressed with this new generation girl and pays the dues himself. Sarama and Rimi gradually become the new sources of inspiration for Sashi to live. He finds the urge to write again. Sashi's cousin Biplab tries to convince him to sell his house. Biplab is a promoter. Sashi refuses everytime though he knows that this old house needs to be renovated. But he feels for the slum dwellers who bath in his pond, for the birds who live in his garden and for his anscestors who have made this huge house. In the meanwhile Sarama's father invites Sashi to spend a holiday in his house in North Bengal. He writes about a blind boy named Gagan and requests Sashi to meet him. He assures his old student that it would be a memorable experience. Gagan, a refugee from Rangpur has a natural talent in music. Sarama's father has arranged a forest safari for Sashi and his daughter. Sashi, Sarama and Suman hear Gagan for the first time. Sarama has an infatuation for this simple village boy. On the first day of their forest safari, she begins to seduce this young man. Gradually he also becomes quite dependent on her. Sarama's father requests Sashi to take him to the city and give him the exposure to perform in front of the city audience. Sashi accepts his proposal and decides to take him to Calcutta. Gagan is trained in Tagore songs by Sarama. Sarama is tired of her loneliness, and finds a new lease of life in Gagan. Sarama shares her love with both Sashi and Gagan. On the other hand, Sashi feels that she should think about Suman's future. Nikhil visits her again and apologises. He repents for his behaviour and confesses to Sarama about his dream to re-start everything. This time Sarama can't refuse him as she as done earlier. She takes time to ponder over. Biplab has managed Sashi to sell a portion of his house. Rimi comes and finds an old diary which has a few poems of Sashi written in his youths. She recites it to her Sashida, and Sashi realises that time has changed. He feel an urge to write again. Sarama finds her 'Sashida' reciting a new poem "Ekdin ke ese bolbe...." to Rimi.
