Whenever we talk of Cop and Gangsters films, Ram Gopal Varma’s name instantly flashes in our mind. He has produced and directed innumerable films on these themes, some of which like Shiva, Satya, Company, Sarkar and Ab Tak Chappan are still considered as towering landmarks in this genre. We have seen such great cinema from this talented director that despite him giving dozens of bad films in the recent past, we continue to expect him to strike back with his next film. Out here too we hope to see the director in his best form as the film is an out-and-out Cop and Gangster Drama featuring Action stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and a promising actor Rana Duggabatti. So let’s find out whether this underworld film maker will hit the bull’s eye or might add another feather to his cap of turkey-flops.

“Department” is story of Shiva Narayan {Rana Daggubati}. An honest and daredevil cop, He joins a new department led by Sr.Inspector Mahadev Bhosale {Sanjay Dutt} where their job is to finish the crime in Mumbai City. Their prime focus are the gangs of Gauhri {Unknown} and Sauthiya {Vijay Raaz}, together they approach their task with ease in order to maintain sanity in the city. In one operation Shiva saves life of a Gangster-turned-Politician Sarjerao Gaikwad {Amitabh Bachchan} who after this incident begins to supporting Shiva. What happens next is what the entire film is about.

Story is nothing novel and has been seen in many films in the past, but out here has some twist and turns. Despite a bad story-line at its premise, the screenplay writers have still tried to create some thriller moments, but sadly they did not go in sync with the flow of the film. Hence, Instead of thrilling moments the movie ended up having more of confusing moments followed by half baked character-sketches (or half explained characters, shall I say) . Never-the-less, some scenes like Sanjay Dutt’s entry scene or The whole chase scene where Department follows Builder Shukla, Amitabh Bachchan’s hilarious intro-scene with Neeraj Vora followed by his meet with Rana and later Sanjay Dutt for first time, Sanjay Dutt explaining Rana about right and wrong, Amitabh Bachchan Booze scene with Rana. On the flip side the entire character of Sanjay Dutt was totally confusing and unexplained. Almost all scenes featuring Vijay Raaz and his gang followed by scenes between Abhimanyu Singh and Madhu Shalini were horrible. They mellowed down the flow of the film with their over-acting and to add salt to the audience’s injury, their scenes were heavily repetitive. Also the makers takes their audience and characters for granted in scenes like Sanjay Dutt convincing Amitabh Bachchan or Rana convinced about Sanjay Dutt, etc. A special mention for the dialogues of Amitabh Bachchan; they are mind blowing. Almost all the dialogues given to these ace actors will be remembered for a long time.

The editing was weak in middle hour of the film, especially in the unwanted scenes of the gangsters, but the chase scene in the first part where the whole department is trying to save the life of a builder was superbly shot and beautifully edited. We all know Ram Gopal Varma’s love for weird camera angles, which keeps growing more and more with each passing film. Out here he claims to have used the latest technology, but rather ended up giving us some of the most absurd camera angles of Indian Cinema. As the film starts, it’s hard to digest all these weird shots, but slowly after some time it slows down or maybe we got acclimatized to it. Some might even feel the movie looks like ‘Making Video’ or some ‘Home Video’ which was not at all required in such type of films.

Music was once a big big positive point in Ram Gopal Varma’s films, but slowly it started to fade out and in some movies was horrible. Out here, except for ‘Thodi Si Jo Pee Li Hai’ and ‘Kammo’, all other songs are bad. The item song ‘Dan Dan’ didn’t even match up with the item songs RGV had showed in his past films. Background music was not at all appealing.

Ram Gopal Varma has been an inspiration for many of today’s talented directors, thanks to his superb work in part. But recently despite of good choice of subjects he has not been able to make his mark. Out here too despite some great performance by Amitabh Bachchan and Rana he does not make his presence in this film except for those wired camera angles. Ram Gopal Varma has forgotten that he is a director and not a camera man. He has to let go of his obsession for weird camera angles and focus more on the subject and treatment of the film. He could have made this film as a super thriller, but ended up making it like a typical RGV films made by his assistants.

Sanjay Dutt starts with great spark, but as the movie moves ahead thanks to his weak characterization he stumbles very badly. You cannot understand this character and this does not go well with the film. Rana looks super cool and does his part very well. Amitabh Bachchan is outstanding in his cameo appearance. His all scenes are mind-blowing and the whole character is pretty interesting. If we remove him from this film, the movie ends up like a ‘B’ grade film. The actresses Laxmi and Anjana hardly have any role in this film. Deepak Tijori is wasted. Vijay Raaz is good in some scenes and bad in others. Abhimanyu Singh and Madhu Shanlini are highly irritating and over the top, and reminded heavily of Manoj Bajpai and Sumukhi’s pairing from RGV’s ‘Daud’.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum?

Dum hai, only for Amitabh Bachchan and Rana’s performance and dialogues. Despite this and few good scenes, the movie has nothing new to offer except for some weird camera shots. It’s a good opportunity lost for Ram Gopal Varma as he fails to score once again in a genre where he use to excel unfailingly year after year. If you ask me, I would love to Deport Ram Gopal Varma back to that era where once he was at his best.
