Everyone thought that Jayanata and Yusuf were brothers. Mumtaj's friend Malati was married to Yusuf. Mumtaj used to look after Malati's ailing mother. Janardan the rent collector of the jamindar, had a eye on Malati. But as she refused Janardan, he conspired with the villager and ostracized Malati and her mother. The reason was, her mother was a Brahmin and her nurse was an lower caste woman Mumtaj. Atul came forward to help Malati in their bad time. Atul was trying to endicate caste system and prejudice from the village. Jayanta went to arrange some money for the treatment of Malati's mother. While coming back he was attacked by some goons and they hit in Jayanta's head and he becomes unconscious. The goons throw him in the river. Malati's mother died. As their house was mortgage to Janardan, he threw out Malati from there. Malati took shelter in Kamini's place. Janardan was surprised when Kamini tried to protect Malati with all her strength. In the mean time famine stroke the village. The villagers wanted Atul to get involved in the relief work. Atul's jamindar promised to give enough money. But rice was not available at all for any money. Janardan did not respond to the villager's request. Rather than the goons of Janardan attacked Atul. Then suddenly appeared Jayanta in the village.
