We know Director David Dhawan for two types of films; Either a Super duper masala comedy or a mindless idiotic flick. In 90’s most of his movies were inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Basu Chatterjee’s films and later hit Hollywood comedies. David’ Son Debuts with his first film “Desi Boys” with a big star cast, Super Hit Music and an interesting theme. So let’s find out what does Rohit Dhawan offer us? Will it be a remake or an outstanding super duper comical hit or ends up like a damp squid in the name of David Dhawan Comedies?

“Desi Boys” is story of two best friends Jerry {Akshay Kumar} and Nick {John Abraham} who are living in recession hit London. Due to unemployment Jerry is not able to take care of his Nephew and Nick is not able to meet expectations of his girlfriend Radhika {Deepika Padukone}. One day they meet the owner of Desi Boyz club {Sanjay Dutt} who offers them a highly paid job of male escort. Jerry takes it and Nick follows him later, together they become an instant hit as Rocco and Hunter. But the truth does not hide for long days and one fine day Jerry looses the possession of his nephew and Nick get caught by Radhika. What happens next is what the entire film about.

Story has something different touch to it. The whole Male escorting stuff is quite interesting and almost new for commercial Hindi films. Screenplay is superb in first half and thus the movie moves with super pace, but as the second half starts the story and screenplay starts to fall apart. The movie goes into different track which are not as appealing as the track in the first half. The movie boost of some enjoyable moments like John and Deepika first meet at pub, John and Akshay’s interview, The whole escorting services by Akshay and John, Deepika and Anupam Kher at Akshay-John’s party, Omi Vaidya –Deepika first date, Omi Firing John, Chintrangada –Akshay Strip game, Akshays Mom, Deepika proposing to John followed by some scenes by Omi and Sanjay Dutt in court room. On the flip side the second half is pretty weak in terms of logic, entertainment and freshness. Not to forget the length of the film followed by plenty of illogical scenes like Akshay getting degree in three months, Satish Kaushik interview, Court room drama and many more. Editing was highly required in the second half. Camera work is good and gives the movie international feel.

Music by Pritam is entertaining. ‘Tu Mera Hero’, ‘Desi Boys’, ‘Jhak Marke’ are chartbuster songs. Rest songs are also nice.

Rohit Dhawan tried to give us a different subject but with style of his father David Dhawan. He tries to keep it total entertaining with Akshay Kumar’s expertise in this genre + some good one liners. But all these are in background and thus not making the film out and out comedy. Sadly he is not supported by full fledge script, which has lots of flaws and distraction in the second half. Looks like he ended up combining his father’s both style of films in his one film.

Akshay Kumar is good and has done his part with total ease. His body language, expression etc are enough to keep you in the film. John has showed a better performance than this Jodi’s last film [Garam Masala]. He is surely an eye candy treat to his female fans. Deepika looks great and does her part. Chitrangada Singh tries to give a decent performance but wished the role was bit longer. Anupam Kher is funny, Omi Vaidya makes us laugh in his few scenes and Sanjay Dutt is fine in his cameo. Monish Behel is highly wasted.

So bol meri ‘FILMI KHOPDI’ is film mein kitna hai DUM ?

Dum hai first half mein total masala entertainer hai. But second half has lots of illogical stuff going around followed by weak script and not matching with the initial first half. Thanks to Decent performances, chartbuster music, some good one liner and all the glam on screen makes you enjoy the film as a onetime watch. I wished Rohit would had directed this film after gaining some maturity or experience as the end result would had been much more better and matured unlike out here where he experimented it with his boyish style.
