The story is based on novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It is the story of Devdas and Paro. Devdas, the son of a rich family, has a loving mom, strict dad Narayan, a elder brother Devidas and bhabhi Kumud. Paro, his neighbour, is from a middle class family , has a dad & mom sumitra. Paro and Devdas are good friends since childhood. Devdas goes off to London to study law and Paro left behind lights a lamp symbolising her love for Devdas, never letting it go off. When Devdas returns both Paro and Devdas realise their love for each other. But conscious of the difference in social status Devdas' family denies the marriage proposal with Paro. Paro is married off to widower Bhuvan Chowdhury. Devdas loses his mental balance and starts living in a different world. One day Devdas meets Chunni babu who takes him to a kotha to watch Chandramukhi's mujra. Chandramukhi falls in love with Devdas. As Devdas visits Chandramukhi often, he starts drinking. During this time Devdas loses his father. When Paro visits them on this occassion she comes to know about Devdas and Chandramukhi. Later when a puja is being at Paro's house some soil is supposed to come from Chandramukhi's kotha. So she visits Chandramukhi. Both get to know each other and their feelings for Devdas. Paro impressed by Chandramukhi invites her to the puja where both dance praising the goddess. Bhuvan Chowdhury has a daughter from his previous wife who's husband is Kalibabu. Kalibabu visits Chandramukhi often. On seeing Chandramukhi at the puja he lets out the secret of Paro and Devdas. Bhuvan Chowdhury restricts Paro from going out. On other hand DEvdas' health suffers as a result of alchohol. Knowing that his death is imminent he wants to visit Paro for one last time. Before leaving Devdas accepts Chandramukhi's love proposal. Devdas goes all the way to Paro's house and dies at her gate, waiting for a glimpse.
