Devdas synopsis (Story)
Devdas is a young man from a wealthy Bengali Brahmin family in India in the early 1900s. Paro (Parvati) is a young woman from a middle class Bengali family belonging to the “merchant” caste. The two families lived in a village in Bengal, and Devdas and Paro were childhood friends. Devdas goes away for thirteen years to live and study in a boarding school in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Meena Kumari wanted to do the role of Paro, which she lost to Suchitra Sen. Her wish to play the role of a Bengali woman got fulfilled when she finally got the role of 'Chhoti bahu' in Sahib Bibi Ghulam.
Bimal Roy was not satisfied with the background music of last few reels of "Devdas". He, along with composer Sachin Dev Burman, went to Salil Choudhury and requested him to do the background of that part. After lot of pestering, he did it, but only after an assurance that his name won't be credited for the work. This was out of his sheer respect to Dada Burman.
