Dharmesh Darshan made his debut as a director with the Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol starrer, Lootere (1993), for which he had written the story as well. The movie went on to become a hit.His second film, was Raja Hindustani (1996) , starring Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor. The movie was a landmark in the careerof Karisma Kapoor whose look and career changed drastically, thereafter. The movie went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the 1990s. He won the Filmfare Best Movie Award and several other awards for the film.
In the year 2000 he had two releases, which were directed and written by himself. His first film Mela starring again Aamir Khan was very unsucessful. However, his second release, Dhadkan with Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty did moderately well at the box office and won him acclaim. His next release in 2002, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya starring Karisma Kapoor and her boyfriend of that period, Abhishek Bachchan was a remake of the 1981 film Ek Hi Bhool and was a complete failure for Darshan at the box office and with critics.
Bewafaa (2005) was hsi next film. It was expected that the film would be a success because of a good musical score and well known stars. However, it performed below averagely at the box office and received average reviews. Aap Ki Khatir (2006) which was a remake of the Hollywood hit The Wedding Date, was also a disaster at the box office.
Besides direction and strory writing Dharmesh has donned the cap of lyricist and dialogue writer as well. He has also turned producer for his upcoming release Bhanvraa - Love And Aggressions.
