80’s started a fresh wave of parallel cinema in India thanks to inspiration from film makers like Satyajit Ray and others. We witnessed some great film makers like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalni, Ketan Mehta, Basu Bhattacharya, Basu Chatterjee, Sai Paranjpe, Kalpana Lajmi, Mani Kaul, Aruna Raje, Rabindra Dharmaraj, Tapan Sinha, Pradip Krishan, Muzzafar Ali, Mrinal Sen, Sagar Sarhadi and many more talented directors. The beauty of most of these genius directors was that they made films on Indian topic but matching it with intellectual viewers of world cinema and most important, ... » read more

From one perspective, Dhobi Ghat, is not the story of Shai, Munna, Arun or Yasmin. It could have been Tom, Dick, Rita and Mary. The script has used the characters as the canvas to portray Mumbai; the city of dreams for millions, who congreg...ate there, across the socio-economic berth. Even in the very small time that I have spent there, I have felt this dream as a palpable force. People working against all odds with the strong belief that Mumbai gives you back what it takes. Obviously there are the exceptions, but folklore’s are born out of success stories. Looking at ... » read more

    Why Dhobi Ghaat ???

Dhobi Ghat rating: 7 out of 10

My first movie in 2011 and the total experience is not bad at all. Dhobi Ghat is nicely made. Good direction, brilliant acting, superb cinematography and overall looks like an output of a great teamwork. Only thing I couldn't understand is why the name is "Dhobi Ghat" as the story has different connections to mumbai along with the dhobi ghat only as a part of it. Story is bit like a chain reaction. A likes B, B likes C and C likes D types ...

A Metaphor for Cities in one City

Dhobi Ghat rating: 7 out of 10

The very logo of the movie Dhobi Ghat itself marks the map of Mumbai, embedded with four principal faces with diverse physiognomies--a clear implication of the contextual content. Keeping apart the actual locale that very much exists in the south Mumbai, one cannot but strain nerves with the etymological or lexical interpretation of the nomenclature " Dhobi Ghat". " Dhobi" denotes washerman, and " ghat" suggests a level place next to a river where the people are cremated ( in Hindu lexicon), bathe, clean, collect( water) or perform any rite. Naturally, the place under ... » read more

Dhobi Ghat is a tale about four different people, every single one from different walks of life, and how their lives interweave in this journey and how they manage with their desire, loneliness, fondness, amity and defeat. The entire story takes a look at four different characters in the dynamic city, Mumbai, or can be called as a video diary on the people of this busy city.

Four people from very dissimilar backgrounds, whose worlds crisscross and abscond them perpetually distorted. As they come across themselves pinched into forceful affairs, the city finds ... » read more

The story revolvers around four persons. It is set in the backdrop of Mumbai's local life. If you are bored from the movies-for-non- intellectuals (viz, Dabang, TMK..), then this one is for you; as it involves complex presentation of lives of people. The main characters: Munna (Clothes washer), Shai (banker) , Yasmin (Married-Muslim Girl) & Arun (Painter). The Narrative is juggling all throughout with recent past & the present. Their is an aunt in Arun's neighboring apartment... » read more

A movie with a different style

Dhobi Ghat rating: 8 out of 10

Dhobi Ghat is a movie which gives a freshness to the film industry. It is different in many ways.As the movie proceeds it is revealed that the three charecters met each other but the fourth one never met the other three but she has given the most touchy performance.
The most important thing of the movie is the relationship of the charecters. The human behavior that people get from each other does matter through the simplicity
and good nature of anybody. The film also found the wonderfull cross section of people of a city called Mumbai.
The actors all did well, ... » read more
