The movie depicts how an unoccupied bungalow of a rich businessman is being used as a shelter for the unemployed and homeless people. Seth Kalidas (Ashok Kumar)’s Kalidas mansion is occupied by a kind old man, Udharchand Shikarpuri (Om Prakash) with a dog (Chikhu) when the Seth is away for six months staying in another city. Vijay (Rajesh Khanna) and Raju (Agha) are asked to evict their home, Kalidas Chawl as Seth Kalidas wants to build a big building. As they are unemployed though educated they are homeless and are provided shelter by this old man who is called 'Chacha" by everybody. Seth's daughter Roopa arrives at this place, and finds the three of them living there. She finds that these are simple, honest and kind hearted and they allow her to stay on. She falls in love with Vijay. However Seth comes searching for her as he has arranged her marriage with Seth Hiralal's son. She persuades him to live with them (in another identity called Kaluva) so that he can get to know Vijay and give consent for their marriage. But Seth is uncomfortable and is irritated while staying with these poor people namely Chacha, Vijay, Raju, Raju's wife Kiran (Bela Bose), child, sister (Helen). So Roopa calls for her mother Rani (Sulochana) to stay with them as a cook and to take care of her father. Initially, Seth Kalidas throws lots of obstacles in Vijay's search for a job but later on, when he realises that the two of them are really good natured and honest, with high thinking, he offer to help them in setting up a job and also gives consent for her marriage. He also offers to marry off Hiralal son to Rita, Raja's sister as they both love each other. As Chacha is happy in his own small world of helping others and needy people, no one informs him of Kaluva's (Seth Kalidas's) and his family's true identity. Finally at the end of the season, when Seth Kalidas is supposed to arrive back from Mussourie, Chacha leaves the place and gives keys of another bungalow to the couple Kaluva and the cook to stay, and leaves for the next empty bungalow. Seth Kalidas and his wife fine true happiness and joys of life after a long time.
