Unlike other Hindi films that play up a binary rich-poor opposition, Dil zeroes in on rich and richer class, the sign of an expanded bourgeoisie that has grown over years of independence. Differences within the bourgeoisie, between the traditional bania and the new multinatinal corporations, point to a broad middle-and-upper-class economy. Mehra goes jogging on the beach with his Doberman, representing the cultural lifestyle of a new elite, totally distinguishable from Hazari Prasad.

The opening scene reveals, a man lies on a bed in a bare room encircled by windows thrown open by a storm. Slowly, pieces of paper drift in from the window. Money, meaps of money, fall on the floor, gradually flooding the room. The camera pulls closer to the man as he mutters incoherently grabbing at the sheaves of money. The image slowly dissolves to the man standing on his bed pulling tufts of cotton from the pillow and speaking excitedly. This is the viewers' introduction to Hazari Prasad.
