Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji rating: 8 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 28 Jan 2011)

We are blessed with so many great film makers in our country. Out of them there are major film makers who have made films with social relevant issues or hard hitting subjects or theme oriented stuffs, etc. But in the process of making serious or hard hitting films, these films makers did try their hand in the some different field too, some tried for out and out commercial films and majority of them tried for a light hearted film. Names like Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Basu Bhattacharya; Raj Kumar Santoshi reminds us that it’s the director’s vision which is most important rather than the theme of the film. Now Madhur Bhandarkar the ace national award winning director after giving us some fantastic films based on different themes of society, comes up with a fresh Rom-Com. Will he be able to do justice to it or will end up making a normal pot boiler films where the films has nothing more to offer than the promo? Let’s find out.

‘Dil To Baccha Hai Ji’ is story of Naren {Ajay Devgan} who is going through mid life crises and has filled a divorce against his wife {Rituparna Sen Gupta}. Naren leaves his home and comes to his parents deserted home. He decides to get two roommates to give him company and some financial support. In the process he ends up with Abhay/Aby {Imraan Hashmi} a Gym instructor cum Casanova and Milind {Omi Vaidya} a poet cum match maker in an online marriage firm. They gel very well and at the same time things change around all of their life’s. Naren meets up June {Shazahn Padamsee} a new entrant in his firm and develops a friendly relationship with her. Milind wins a Poet contest hosted by an Rj Gun Gun {Shraddha Das} and falls in love with her. Last but not the least Abhay meets an older women Anushka Narang {Tisca Chopra} who is wife of a multimillionaire and ends up in a deep relationship with her. What happens next to these men’s with heart of boys is the entire movie about.

Story is simple and nice, though it reminds you somewhere about Basu Chatterjee’s Shaukeen {But it’s just a slight remembrance and nothing more}. Screenplay of the film is superb, especially in the first half. It’s very tight and entertaining in the first half, filled with funny and sweet moments. Second half starts suddenly with more on serious note and this it slows down for a while, but picks up after some time leading to an unexpected climax. I loved the climax part which was more of realistic and different than the usual run of the mill Rom-Com films. On the flaw side the whole Imraan-Shruti romantic angle dint justify at all, a Casanova like Imraan falling for Shruti was not written very well and had hurried up moments between them. But then on the positive side one will love the Start Credits, Omi – Gay {jimmy juhu} talks, Omi at Poets club, Imraan – Tisca – Qasab chat, Ajay and Imraan talks over Cyrus Batiwala, Ajay with Shazahn at 5 star hotel, Shazahn coming over at Ajay’s house, Shruti Imraan revelation and last but not the least the whole fantastic usage of ‘Koi Hota Jisko Apna’ song in the film.

Editing is crisp in the first half, and could have done better work in second part of the film. Cinematography is fine and captures the mood of the film.

Music by pritam is enjoyable. Jaadugari, Abhi Kutch Dino Se and Tere Bin will make you enjoy these songs with the movie. Background music score does full justice to the mood and feel of the film.

Madhur Bhandarkar is a diehard Hindi movie buff and we all know that thru his interviews, but now you can feel it while watching this film. He has captured this genre with so ease, that one dies think twice that is it the same Madhur Bhandarkar who gave us hard hitting films like Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion and more. Now that’s a great quality of a genius directors like Madhur, they don’t need any genre to bind them, they can deliver in any genre which they believe in. If this film would had been made by some other director they would had included more unwanted humorous scenes, but madhur has done full justice to the script and none of the humorous scenes looked unwanted. They go very well with the film and whole simplicity – realistic angel is maintained in the film, but with an outer coating of sweetness. Way to go Madhur, we now want to see you in more such different genre with keeping in Madhur Bhandarkar style like it was in this film.

Ajay devgan plays a role of his age and at times gives a hilarious performance. Though at times we do remember Anil Kapoor from Salaam E Ishq. Also loved Ajay singing in his own voice after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Check him out when he keeps peeping at Shazahn. Imraan Hashmi has proved that when he has worked with good directors he has delivered his best, same goes for when he out of Mahesh Bhatt camp. All those romantic scenes of him in Bhatt banner now start looking sleazy and same stuff out here in this film or ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ looks classy. His witty dialogs and style makes his character totally colorful. Omi Vaidya is the most lovable character in this film; his scenes in first half of the film are one of the best scenes from the film. Check him out in the pre climax scene where he reads the letter from Gun Gun, this guy has more to offer than only comical roles. Shazahn looked cute and lively and Shraddha Das did justice to her character. Shruti Hassan looked out of the place in the film. Tisca Chopra does a great job in her new Avatar, but fails somewhere as a seductress. Aditya Raj Kapoor, Rituparna and Mukesh Tiwari were average. It was nice to see Daisy Irani after a long time.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai, first half total dumdaar hai. You will enjoy the feel good moments in the first half of the film. The second half has some serious moments, but the whole feel good moments keep continuing throughout the film. Climax is different and simple, which again goes well with the whole mood of the film. So let the baccha or say Naughty baccha inside you come out and enjoy this film.

    Rating – 3.75+/5
