Dipak Mukhopadhay was born on 12th July, 1919 in Kolkata. His real name was Kanailal.His cousin brother was director Ardhendu Mukhopadhay who gave his screen name Dipak. In 1938, Dipak passed Matriculation from Khidderpore Academy. He graduated from Surendranath College and then became Boiler Engineer. Although he was an engineer, he joined Indian Army as an ordinary soldier and served the country during Second World War. But he took retirement from this job on 24th July, 1946 just when he got promoted in Indian Army.
Dipak had no formal training in acting. He was literally forced by his cousin brother director Ardhendu Mukhopadhay to work in his film “Purbaraag” in the lead role in 1947. It marked his initiation in the world of acting also. He had played the role of Villain and all negative roles with ease. His noteworthy films include Boloygras (1954) , Rakhtapalas(1962) , Jibonmrityu(1967). He had also worked later as a professional stage artist and in some Hindi films.
