Do dooni CAR!!
After the dhoom dham of films like Dabang, Anjana Anjani and Robot, the dust has settled giving way to a fresh and simple film this week, Habib Faisal’s debut venture Do Dooni Chaar. The film’s been talked about a lot for Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor who are coming together as the lead pair after 30 years! Do Dooni Chaar is the story of a middle class Delhi-ite family who want to make their transition from a 2-wheeler scooter to a 4-wheeler car. The film also stars Archit Krishna, Aditi Vasudev and Akhilendra Mishra.
The Duggals are a middle class family in Delhi who make just enough money to get by. With Mr. Duggal being a school teacher his 3 figure salary can just about cover the bare necessities but this isn’t enough when he has a car-obsessed teenage daughter, a gambling teen son and a wife who dreams of the good life. Their simple scooter driven life takes a turn for the better when a small tiff with a neighbor provokes Mr. Duggal to dream of buying a car! And thus begins the story of this 2 wheeler family to progress to a 4 wheeler family.
Do Dooni Chaar has a very different concept… what’s most appealing about this film is that Habib Faisal keeps it grounded and simple throughout. All of the Duggals’ problems are quite realistic and can happen in any family. However, this car does have a very slow pick-up because the first half of the film is quite dragging … the build up to actually deciding to buy the car. The second half though, is more interesting with Mr. Duggal devising ways to arrange for the finances for the car. The beauty of the film is also a dig at the plight of teachers in our country… throughout the film there are tongue in cheek comments about the pitiful salaries that teachers earn.
Being a first time director Habib Faisal knows his ropes well. Do Dooni Chaar looks like a low budget film but roping in Walt Disney and becoming Disney’s first live action Hindi feature film is quite an achievement.
Besides the direction, the performances in the film are also top notch. Rishi Kapoor is brilliant as the under dog school teacher fighting his conscience and trying to understand his wife and sister’s need to “look rich”. Aditi Vasudev and Archit Krishna also perform beautifully as the kids who dream big.
The show stealer though is Neetu Kapoor … she’s fantastic! She looks so cute as his understanding, caring wife and mother with her own ‘nakhras’ and ‘taanas’. She’s always there for her husband whether it’s taking an important decision or showing the ‘mohallawallas’ who’s the boss!
The music of the film is average with the title track “Do Dooni Chaar” standing out among the rest.
Overall Do Dooni Chaar is a simple yet enjoyable film that also has a message. At no point in its 2-hour length does it get preachy or melodramatic on the other hand neither is it slapstick funny or rippling with laughter but it definitely is a film that brings a smile on your face and leaves you with meaningful entertaining cinema. I would say watch it for Neetu Kapoor… just for her it’s a one time must watch! J
