Dominique Cerejo, the singer, mesmerised listeners with her rendition of ‘Yeh tumhari meri baatein’ in Rock On. Sung in a sensually soothing voice, the track made the hitherto unknown singer a singing sensation overnight. She thinks, that with new music directors making their foray into Bollywood, Bollywood music is in a new phase of evolution. A few of the recent songs have a much more global appeal, and music directors are always looking out for fresh voices and singers who bring a lot of individuality and personality to the songs and that gives her and others a lot of opportunities. She has been part of several bands, including Faces in the Dark that she is currently associated with.
Dominique used to dream about music as a child and she always wanted to grow up to be a singer. She was seven or eight when she participated in her first singing competition held by her local church. Not having really planned it, she just went and sang for a lark. After her performance, her mom told her that she shouldn’t be upset if she didn’t win. But, she was indeed the winner! She didn’t train to start with, though later she went for singing classes to be more confident and learn more about the technique of singing. She thinks, even though some people are born singers, they still have to take lessons to perfect the art and also for her, riyaaz is very important. Shankar Mahadevan was the first to give her an opportunity to showcase her talent. They have known each other for a very long time, since their advertising days. She sang for Dus – the first film he worked on – and was part of the chorus of the Taare Zameen Par title track, but she gained popularity only after Rock On.
Dominique loves listening to all kinds of music. However, she doesn't like formula-based music and packaged songs. Among her co-singers, she likes Sunidhi Chauhan as she thinks, she is multi-talented and Shreya Ghoshal because she has one of the best and most versatile voices in Bollywood.
Dominique is married to Clinton Cerejo, who is also in the music industry and worked in many Hindi movies with leading music directors as playback singer, programmer, etc. They met when they were at college. Dominique is currently working on a couple of films and her own album.
