Don (Amitabh Bachan) is the most wanted international smuggler, on the list of Interpol, is one the most powerful man in the world of crime. Don is completely merciless even towards his own men. Ramesh, who works for Don decides to leave this profession, but Don kills him. Ramesh’s fiance Kamini (Helen) gets completely shettered and decides to take the revenge. DCP D'Silva (Iftikhar), sets up Kamini with Don in a hotel room, but Don kills Kamini and escapes. Ramesh’s sister, Roma (Zeenat Aman), joins the gang, to take revenge on the deaths of Ramesh and Kamini. Soon, a chase leads to Don getting injured and dying in D’Silva’s arms. D’Silva wants to get to the bottom of the activities and wants to send a lookalike in place of Don. Vijay (Amitabh in a double role) who is a street dancer and singer and asked by D’Silva to impersonate as Don. In return, D’Silva will take care of the two children who are Vijay’s companions. Vijay is send back to the gang, as if he has lost his memory. He comes to know of many secrets and convinces the gang that he is Don. Roma is however waiting for the day Don’s memory will be back and she can kill Don and take her revenge. Vijay steals a diary which has all the secret identities of the gang members and hands it over to D’Silva. The plot complicates when the crippled JJ (Pran), the father of the children, and wrongly sent to jail by D’Silva, comes back from jail to settle the score with D’Silva and when D’Silva is shot dead by the gang. Vijay as Don is caught by the police, but he cannot prove that he is actually a police informer. Inspector Malik gives Vijay a couple of chances, but in vain. Will Vijay be able to prove his innocence and find the actual kingpin of the gang, known as Vardhan? Will JJ be able to find his children?
