Film maker Deepak Rai Walia (Raj Babbar) is the son of Mr. Daulat Rai Walia (Iftekar). He has two step sisters of marriageable age from his father's second marriage to Mrs. Walia (Urmila Bhatt). Deepak is deeply in love with Shaila Thakur (Anita Raj), who stays with her brother Mr. Thakur (Ramesh Deo) and his wife. Deepak does not work in his father's business because he wants to make it big on his own. This is the reason he has delayed marrying Shaila as well. Deepak's smooth life takes a turn for the worse when his father dies after a heart attack. Before dying, Deepak's father tells him that he has lost his entire business and money. Deepak's family advocate (Jagdish Raj) informs him that he'd have to sell everything the family owns to settle his father's debts. Deepak buys six months from the advocate to get out of this mess and marry off his sisters. He also decides not to inform his step mother and sister about all this. While searching for suitable grooms for his sisters, Deepak finds it impossible to get a good match without giving an exorbitant sum of money as dowry, after many failed attempts at finding a good match due to dowry, deepak works out an unusual escape route. He promises the fathers of two girls Rita (Neelam) and Seema (Simple Kapadia), that is Seth Lakhi Prasad (Madan Puri) and Seth Shyam Sundar, that he would marry their daughters in return for a dowry less, marriage of their sons with his own sisters. His plan is to marry off his sisters and then later on some how slip out of his commitment to marry the girls. However, the two men soon find out about Deepak's scheme, when Deepak refuses to marry the two girls due to his love for Shaila, all hell breaks loose. The two families start severely ill-treating Deepaks sisters. When the two girls are unable to bear the torture, they rush back to their mother's arms. Now Deepak's secret of the financial mess left by his father also comes out. His stepmother and sisters suspect him of having misappropriated the money. Deepak's life becomes even worse when Shaila finds out about his plans and begins to hate him. Shalia even decides to mary someone else to get back at deepak. To get out of all these problems, Deepak marries a rich man's daughter Pushpa (Padma Chavan) to get enough money to pay off the in laws of both his sisters. Pushpa is unhappy with this marriage because she is in love with a poor man Yogesh (Vijay Arora). On her wedding night, she fights with Deepak for marrying her due to the dowry given by her father. She then takes out a gun to kill herself after the scuffle that follows , Pushpa's father hears a gunshot . When the door is broken down, they find Pushpa's dead body with the gun in Deepak's hands. Deepak is tried in the court for Pushpa's murder, and in the court, deepak blames the monster of the dowry system for all the problems. Luckily, Pushpa's last letter to Yogesh (actually her suicide note) saves Deepak from being sentenced for murder. Also, his sister husbands agree to support their wives and refuse to continue asking for dowry. Shaila too forgives deepak-and so does his mother.
