‘Goa’ has been generally featured as tourist destination or holiday retreat in our Hindi movies. Besides these romantic or feel good films, it has been featured over its patriotic angle too in films like Saat Hindustani, Pukar, Trikaal and few more. But then there are few films where ‘Goa’ has been featured as the land of Dope, Naseerudin Shah’s Jalwa and few more are perfect examples of this dark side of Goa. Decades later Rohan Sippy dares to reveal the reality of Goa’s drug mafia and its operation but in commercial movie style. So let’s find out? Will this movie match the director’s last venture ‘Bluff master’ or the master will vanish leaving behind the bluff for its audience.

“Dum Maaro Dum” is story based on the Drug mafia operations in Goa. Innocent youngsters like Lorry {Prateik Babbar} get caught in the drug net. In comes ACP Vishnu Kamath {Abhishek Bachchan} who plans to wipe out the whole Drug Mafia from the map of Goa. He is supported by his team {Govind Namdeo} and a young musician Joki {Rana Daggubati}. All the leads point out to one name – Michael Barossa, and to trace Michael Barossa Kamath has to get hold of Lorsa Biscuta {Aditya Pancholi} and his people. How does ACP Kamath reach Michael Barossa is all the film about.

Story is interesting and has good grip in its narration. The screenplay works as a thriller, especially in the first half where the movie runs with the total pace and has loads of thrilling and interesting moments. But as the second half starts the thriller slows down and retains its grip near the climax, which sadly is predictable. Still the movie has some good scenes to watch out {Especially in the first half} – The whole Prateik story, Abhishek and Minister talks, Abhishek Nabbing Drug guys, Abhishek torturing Pedro, Abhishek Phone a Friend, Abhishek Nabbing Prateik, Bipasha learning Newton’s 4th law, Rana-Bipasha story, Abhishek and Aditya in the party, Abhishek at the night market, Abhishek Singing ‘Khai Ke Paan’, The whole Rave Party in the anti climax and few more. On the flip side the second half narration is slow and total contrast to the first half of the film, the whole Bipasha-Rana chapter loses its charm after the basic intro of their relationship, Last but not the least the whole predicted climax. But despite of knowing the predictable climax, there are still some good thrilling elements in the climax blended with some good twist and turns. Some minor amount of Editing is required in the second half to make this thriller movie more interesting and enjoyable.

Camera work is of top notch, the whole capturing of Goa spirit in good and bad ways is done brilliantly. The movie gives the feel of international film, with its good camera work and fantastic locations {The beaches, The Goan Culture, Rave Parties, Etc}.

Music by Pritam is fine, but when it comes in comparison with Rohan Sippy’s last work ‘Bluff master’, its fails. Still ‘Te Amo’, ‘Raat’ and ‘Thai Thai’ appeals to you as it has some good visual moments along with the audio track. ‘Bechainiya’ could have been avoided. ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ Remix is nowhere to match the craze and enigma of the original R.D.Burman composition. Neither do Deepika has the same sex appeal and grace which Zeenat Aman had, but still there is something interesting and attractive about Deepika in this song which makes you watch it, without complaining. Background music is good and goes well with the film.

Rohan Sippy’s last work ‘Bluff master’ was an interesting thriller with some good suspense element in it. The twist and turns in the end went well with the film. In between the both half’s he had lost the track out there too. Same happens here in ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ but if compared with the earlier flick the climax of this one is not at par. Still a good attempt by Rohan Sippy and he succeeds on the first half, thrilling moments, technical aspects and some decent performances. He has attempted something different and yes the work speaks.

Abhishek Bachchan has been hammered by the critics for his last few films getting flop. But out here if the history repeats itself, he won’t be blamed for sure. He does his part superbly and as a Narcotics cop he shines with his style and dialog delivery. His whole screen appearance is different than out usual masala commercial film cops. Rana Daggubati gives an impressive appearance in this film. He is confident and does his part with total justification. Would like to watch more from this guy. Prateik is nice in the small role. Bipasha Basu looks good, but her role is not that great. Aditya Pancholi is same old as we had seen him a decade back. Same goes for Govind Namdeo and Anaitha Nair.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai, achcha khaasa dum hai boss especially in the first half. Sadly the second half looses the charm set by the initial part of the film. But still overall a good thriller with some nice twist and turns. The movie has its potential to hold you throughout the film {Thanks to Shridhar Raghavan}. Also the performance by the main two heroes makes you take sniff through this film and enjoy.
