Duti Mon rating: 5 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 16 May 2011)

Duti Mon is a nice film after a long time with a new pair and very performances all around .The film is centered around Bijoy, a mentally challenged guy who stays with two elder brothers, his sister in law and his nephew in a house which he actually owns .His present state is basically due to negligence, ill treatment and lack of sympathy on part of his sister-in-law and one of his brothers. He is only loved by his eldest brother Sujoy and his nephew.

Rumi, his sister-in-law’s younger sister comes to stay in her sister’s house with her mother for a month and immediately takes to Bijoy and starts treating him like a human being. When she invites him for her birthday, he turns up at her birthday but is insulted by his sister-in law.Rumi’s marriage is fixed with a guy whose father wants Rumi’s parents to finance his education. One the day of her marriage when her father is unable to pay the entire money, her future father- in-law threatens to disrupt the marriage.Rumi decides not to get married to the guy and asks them to leave.Bijoy who had been locked up so long , manages to comes out and applies vermillion on her forehead and ‘marries’ her. After their marriage both of them go away to a place outside Kolkata so that Rumi can tend to him and make him more normal as he is basically a normal person. He does become quite normal and even save his brother’s life when he land up with his family and tries to save Bijoy when he had been kidnapped by goons. His sister-in-law begs forgiveness.

There are hardly any subplots barring the one involving Ajoy and the director lays stress on the actual plot which is why it is more credible. Although the song involving the ‘high society looks ridiculous however the film completely rests on individual performances and everyone manages to shine including the people who play the part of the servants. The songs aren’t up to the mark. When was the last time when a new pair was excellent in their very first film and also the film too was more than okay? One can’t recall a new pair of debutantes in recent years like Rohit and Mayuri who are quite good in their first film. The film is centered around Bijoy (Rohit) and he does impress with his body language, his acting, his composure right throughout the film though he is much better in his mentally challenged state than in his state of normalcy.Mayuri gives him the desired support as Rumi and is composed, calm and restrained. She is quite impressive.Ranjit Mullick acts in a role which he has acted several times over so it is a cakewalk for him. His wife played by Indrani Ghosh is another revelation.
