The film is based on a bold topic addressed in a novel written by Rajinder Singh Bedi. The story revolves around one family. Trilok (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who is a taangewala, invariably takes passengers from the station to the dharamshala. One day trilok dropped a girl to that dharamshala whose brother is about to come the next day. But that night, the owner of that dharamshala rapes and murders her. The next day when her brother comes, the girl's body is hidden in Trilok's taanga. Trilok was unaware of this, but the brother, thinking that Trilok was the murderer, kills Trilok in a fit of anger. Later on all are arrested.
However, as the income for the family stops, Trilok's younger brother Mangal (Rishi Kapoor) decides to operate the taanga, but he gets into a fight with some fellow taangawalas and gets imprisoned for some months. When he comes back, he finds his bhabhi, that is Trilok's wife, Ranno (Hema Malini) working in some construction area. The village folk were teasing and taunting her. So, the village panchayat, in adherence with the age old custom of 'Chaadar Chadhana' ask Mangal to marry his bhabhi. However, Mangal loves Raaji (Poonam Dhillon) and has always looked upon his sister-in- law almost like a mother. What happens next? Will he marry his bhabhi? What will happen to Raaji?
