Vishal (Dharmendra) is a middle class poet, who does not like to be bossed over by anyone. He wants to earn his living on his own terms. He is in love with Aruna (Sharmila Tagore), who is a modern and practical girl and who understands the value of money and compromises. Aruna works at a publication house owned by Anand Sehgal (Ashok Kumar) with whom she shares a very good relationship. One day, Aruna finds that she is suffering from an optical disease due to which she will be permanently blinded after 6 months. Aruna thinks it’s better to move out of Vishal's life, so that he can start afresh rather than leaving him in. She marries Anand Sehgal, leaving Vishal sad and dejected and with a misconception that she has been lured by Dr Sehgal's wealth. A few days later, Anand Sehgal's daughter Sonia (Leena Chandavarkar) returns after completion of her studies. After a few initial misunderstandings, Sonia and Aruna strike a bonding and become good friends. Meanwhile, Sonia meets Vishal at a poetic meet and is intrigued by his morose poetry. They come close to each other and Vishal contemplates about starting a new life altogether. On the other hand, Aruna realises that she does not have any such disease. She tells this to her husband, But before they can go to Vishal, they meet with an accident which resukts in Mr Sehgal's death. Soon Aruna realises that Sonia loves Vishal. Aruna decides to sacrifice her love all over again and pretends to fake blindness with the help of Dr Abraham (David). For how long will Aruna be able to continue this farce?
