Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 10 Feb 2012)

There are two types of Romantic films, one which talks about pain, true love, drama, bonding, etc and another where its love which happens in fun way. Films made on the first theme mostly are classics or duds, but films made on the latter theme at least makes you get the worth of your ticket money and sometimes popcorn too. They are full of peppiness, good humor, fresh chemistry, nice locations, decent music, etc. Haste khelte Love ho jaata hai, is the motto of such films. We see many of such films being made in Hollywood and from recent times out here too. “Ek Main Aur Ek Tu” belongs to the second theme and promises to give you fun ride blended along with youth romance. So let’s find out if the makers succeed in what they claim or might be just another Hollywood clone with no soul.

“Ek Main Aur Ek Tu” is story of Rahul {Imraan Khan} an upper class architect based in Las Vegas. Rahul lives a pretty organized and boring life with lots of interference by his parents {Boman Irani & Ratna Pathak Shah}. He is so scared of them that he does not even mention about him being jobless when they visit him. In depression he meets Riana Braganza {Kareena Kapoor} a happy going lucky hair stylist but at that moment jobless. With a strange incident both become friends and while partying accidently marries each other. What happens next is what the film about.

Story is one liner like most of candy floss romantic films have. It might also remind you of few Hollywood films and most important Imtaiz Ali’s Jab We Met. But it’s the screenplay and witty dialogs which holds you in the film and entertains you at many occasions. Scenes like Imraan with his parents in L.A followed by the party at Ram Kapoors place, Imraan and Kareena at the pub, Imraan on date, Imraans dancing on ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, Kareenas school visit are total enjoyable. The Climax needs a special mention as it’s quite practical and might be trending in terms of Hindi Cinema. But there are chances of it being a biggest negative point from the single screen audience point. On the flip side little more character establishment of Kareena was required as she could have been more than Geet part 2 of Jab We Met. Also a bit of more focus on romantic track was required rather than being focused on Imraan and his family. Camera work is good and movie gets full marks for capturing the mood of the film with some fantastic locations of Las Vegas. Editing is crisp and fast. The movie length is just around two hours and does not give you time to think or get bored at all.

Music by Amit Trivedi is young and peppy. Jaise Din, Ek main Aur Ek Tu are enjoyable tracks with good visuals. Gubbare and Aahatein define the mood of the film. Auntyji is total rocking. Still one romantic track {popular} was required.

Debutant director Shakun Batra succeeds in making a young candy floss film. He tells his take so swiftly and interestingly that you hardly get any time to find out the flaws. His way of ending the film was superb and will be appreciated by the younger audience. If only he would had worked bit more on establishing the bonding between the lead pair, especially Kareena it would had worked more for the film. Still no complaints as whatever he did was entertaining, enjoyable and interesting.

Imraan Khan Shines in this tailor made role for him. His character is so fine defined that one cannot imagine anyone else other than Imraan in this role. Yes he might remind you of his character from Delhi Belly, but I feel this one takes the character of Delhi Belly to another level. Kareena Kapoor does a sweet role and reminds you of Geet from Jab We Met. Wished her character would have been deeper as Imraan. Boman Irani and Ram Kapoor are fine. Ratna Pathak Shah is superb. Nikhil Kapoor is funny. Spotted Imraan’s wife Avantika doing a screen appearance in the song, just like how Reena did with Aamir in QSQT.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” iss film mein kitna hai Dum?

Dum hai and total entertaining hai. If you like fresh, candy floss type romantic films then go for it. It won’t disappoint you for sure. The climax as said earlier might not be appreciated by Single screen audience, but if compared with the film and today’s scenario goes perfect with it. So enjoy the ‘Valentine Week’ with this sweet flick.
