Hi Friends - Its Valentine Time...Karan Johar always wanted the Valentine week for this 'SHORT TERM SHAADI' turned 'EK MAIN AUR EKK TU' release. But Aamir told 'Stand By Me' as he Pre-booked this date for his 'TALAASH'. But as luck is in favour of Karan...TALAASH got postponed and Karan got his dream release.
We the movie "LOVERS", also prefer a Mushy Romantic movie over an Action Thriller during this Lovey Dovey Season.
And when it comes from the Prince of Romance, KARAN JOHAR himself then the expectations increase a little more, specially as it's a follow up to his highly successful AGNEEPATH. So Lets see whether all this is Karan's intelligent marketing gimmick or the movie is really a Lovely ROM COM Mushy film.
Lets clear the first thing first...unlike the promos indicate...the movie is not a copy of 'WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS'. Instead its a very cool movie where even though the lead couple who're also accidental husband-wife dare to sleep in the same bed they don't involve in any SEX Act. In fact not even a KISS. (Sorry Single Screen guys). Also there is not a single song which can be said to be a purely ROMANTIC LOVE Song.
Then how can we tag this as a perfect Movie for Valentine Week. Come on guys - Yeh To Hona Hi Tha...It was just Karan's trick & timing to get youths to cinema hall and cash on the Valentine fever.
Now come out of this Romantic thought, and you see EMAET is a fresh film from the fresh director 'SHAKUN BATRA' and you'll fully enjoy this coming-of-age trendy film.
'PAPPU CAN DIRECT SAALA'...Surprised. Yes, Shakun is none other than the Pappu of Imran starrer JAANE TU YA Jaane NA... After assisting few directors and appearing on screen as a small time actor in JTYJN, DON etc he has come up with directing this movie and has done full justice to his baby. He's very clear of what he wants to show on screen. He wanted to present the story of two protagonists who got married accidentally and were never in love actually. And he has stick to this story with just a small cast of their individual family. In fact the two families never even come face-to-face also.
The director has not deviated from the main plot eben though there were chances to show some sub-plots or some dreamy love songs but he had restarined from all this. Simply he has divided his storyline into certain specific days where something happens in the lead pair's life that is significant to the story of the film. This daywise rendition with Imraan's voiceover is one of the highlight of the movie.
The actual storyline without going into each day in detail...Rahul Kapoor (IMRAN KHAN) is a very uptight upper class achitect who is always out to please his highly ambitious Dad (BOMAN IRANI) and status concious Mom (RATNA PATHAK SHAH). He even hides his Jobless status from them. He accidentally gets married to a 'Baal kaatnewali Ladki' Riana Braganza (KAREENA KAPOOR) in a drunken state in LAS VEGAS. Riana is a Happy Go Lucky Hair Stylist and had already dumped six boyfriends. She tries to be Happy always, even parties very hard on the Christmas eve just after her last breakup with some SAM. She has no money left to pay her rent so convinces Rahul for a one-night LIVE-IN. The rest of the story is about how EK Cute Girl changes Ek Idotic Boy from being in a boring life into having a Fun filled life.
Actingwise Imraan had made his character very believable and the audience gets hooked to his transformation from a Cute Boy to a sexy adult who can seduce even Aunties. Check out his date scene with ex-GF Anusha (Soniya Mehra) or the dining table scene with an Aunty (Ram Kapoor's wife).
Riana's characer seems little underdeveloped. Shakun could have used her last love-story and breakup to build her character more stronger. He simply left it over to Kareena to make audience belive that she is a strong mature girl. Like her carefree character 'Geet' in 'JAB WE MET' here too Kareena has excelled in her role. Infact after working with all three leading KHANs in her last three films, here she enacts very maturely with the fourth Khan. Her acting makes us to wait and look for her more in her next with her own Khan - Agent Vinod.
There was very less screenspace for all the character artistes. They just playout their roles. There was nothing unusual in Imraan's parents. Though Boman is a strict father here but he repeats his usual Dean kinda character. Ratna looks coming straight out of her 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai' character. All actors in Kareena's family were entertaining. Specially the father who asks her daughter casually whether she have had sex with Rahul !!! The granny who shouts at Rahul for changing clothes in front of a switched on TV !!!
Vinod Mehra's daughter Soniya as Rahul's ex GF had nothing to do, except trying seducing him. Ram Kapoor and other characters were there just for sake without adding anything much to the storyline.
The music of film is very peppy, the title song being the most cathcy. Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya's combination again goes very well with the theme of the movie. The song picturisation is also very eye pleasing. the Cinematography and locations of LAS VEGAS adds the MIDAS touch. Imraan's real life valentine AVANTIKA in the song 'Get up and Dance' was a good surprise.
The most trendy element of the movie is its unconventional climax. Today's youth will relate to these dialogues very easily. Last but the best point of EMAET is its sharp editing. Just about the time one starts thinking that the going ons are getting very monotonous, Rahul rebels against his parents and the movie ends at a very high point not getting into being very dramatic.
So what's the conclusion to this confusion - Every Love can conclude to a great friendship - But every great friendship not necessarily coclude into LOVE.
The high ROMANTIC expectations of the audience might not go well with the mood of the movie. They may find the absence of the two-sided love very abstract. Also it's not very clear why Riana who had never shied away from being in love (SIX times earlier) is why so reciprocative to Rahul's proposal whom she thinks is her best friend. The families doing nothing towards their kids Love-life (neither support nor oppose) and no conclusive end to the new pair Imran-Kareena's pair also leaves audience cheated.
So no No 'Love' means - no collections. Just as they say all this special days like 'VALENTINE DAY' is only for City people...the movie too will stay success (whatever it could be) till cities only and for inner cicrcles it'll be a strict NO-NO !!!
