“Ekhoniy” was directed & scripted by the great Tapan Sinha. It was released in the late 1970. The film was adapted from Ramapada Chowdhury’s novel. The film was the first of its kind & created a stir in the society. A thoroughly anti-capitalist, pro-socialist venture, “Ekhoni” depicted the lives & frustrations of a bunch of youth, struggling to cope with the adversities of a bureaucratic society. The film was a work of pure quality. The music was conceived by Sinha himself & was realistic if not stupendous. The ensemble cast in included Swarup Dutta, Anubha Gupta, Mrinal Mukherjee, Aparna Sen, Mousumi Chatterjee, Jui Banerjee, Subhendu (guest), Chinmoy Roy & many others. The camera & the frames were certainly not perfect & the mid close & mid long shots could have been dealt with greater precision. But the “heart” of the film was pure & so was its form & narration. We find tinges of neo-realist aspects in the sequence of Mrinal Mukherjee’s interview. The songs have been sung by Mrinal Mukherjee himself. Worth a watch!
